25O'cc WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS STAND-
Okada stays perfect
I
massively popular pole starter, and the
vast crowd was in ecstasy as he led off
the line, fighting off an early challeI!ge
from Masaki Tokudome's Docshop
Aprilia to make the early running.
But he was in for a torrid race, as first
. Noboru Veda's not'ably fast Pileri
. Honda took over the lead, with Tokudome and VGT Honda's Tomomi Man-'
ako. Meanwhile 18-year-old Valentino
Rossi was charging through - 15,th on
the first lap, but giving a display of
"'youthful aggression as he carved
through the field.
Rossi joined the leaders on lap nine,
and sliced through to take to the front.
two laps later. The rest stayed·with him,
Martinez, Veda and (briefly) Manako all
led at various points, preparing .for a
last-lap showdown.
.
By the finish, Tokudome and Manako had slipped back slightly, but the
other three were locked together. It was
Rossi who fought the hardest, far
enough ahead into the final hairpin to
defend his lead, with Veda and Martinez packed up behind.
German veteran Peter Oettl prevailed
over his group to put his VGT Aprilia
sixth, comfortably clear at the finish of
the similar bike of Kazu to Sakatao
Hard-luck story of the race came
from Australian charger Garry McCoy,
who'd qualified second. He started with
the leaders but was soon dropping back
to retire. "My engine was coughing its
guts up," was his graphic description.
Rossi's win, after he had crashed out
of the lead of the Japanese GP, moves
him to second. overall, with Veda lead-'
ing the points on 61, Rossi on 50, then
Sakata (49), Martinez (37) and Toku-.
dome (27).
