MOTOCROSS· WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 250cc MOTOCROSS SERIES By Geoff Meyer VALKENSWAARD, NE'IHERLANDS, APR. 14 ...... l-< ~ 32 he 1997 World Championship 250cc Motocross Series is turning into a four-way battle involving defending champ Stefan Everts, 1996 series runner-up Marnicq Bervoets, Tallon Vohland and 125cc World Champion Sebastian Tortelli, and while it seems Bervoets and Tortelli won the battles in the latest round of the series in Holland, it's very much a war Everts and Vohland are engaged in up front Bervoets did what many though impossible. "Beating Stefan here is very much a good feeling," Bervoets said. "He's won the Dutch GP the past three years with maximum points." Bervoets, who posted a solid 4-1 result for 33 points, looked happy with his resul t, but it was Vohland and Everts who left the sand of Holland with the series points lead. "h's all that matters," Everts said. ''I'm on top with Tallon. We have a long, long way to go." "I've got to beat these guys." Vohland would smile when hearing that statement. What of Tortelli? The French sensation blasted away with the first mota in much the same fashion as his openinground win in Spain, but then committed the same error as in Spain and crashed out of contention of the second mota, finally finishing in 11th place. :'I crashed on the first lap, then got going again, but landed wrong on one of the jumps and crashed again, then again later. "After the third crash, I decided to take it easy," said a sore and sorry Tortelli. Vohland was not surprised of TortelIi's problems. "In the first mota, I was following him (Tortelli) and he was wild," Vohland said. "He nearly crashed a couple of times, then I backed off. We were both riding on our limit."
