The l/3-miJe, banked oval was beautifully prepped, but it took no time at all in the very crisp, cold night air before the track was a hardpacked, wide blue groove. Lots of rubber was left in Bakersfield. The race featured an all-scratch format with three rounds of heat racing. Riders earned points by finishing positibn. The first heat of the night matched the reigning National and California State Champion, Steve Lucero, against Steve Furman, Andy Northrup, Rick Pearce and Kon Baur. It was probably the easiest win of the night for Lucero as he Cut. great gate and led from start to finish. Pearce, who won the Handicap Main at the Costa Mesa Spring Classic proved it was no fluke as he posted a solid second with Baur third and Northrup fourth. John Aden used a laydown Jawa motor and continued his winning ways on the big track as he topped Greg Ayers, Brad Oxley and Richard Jones to post the second heat victory. Faria, more at home on the big track than most, wowed the 2500-plus spectators as he won the third heat, popping wheelies down the straightaways. Ronnie Kemp was there for second with Gary Ackroyd third and Mike Reed fourth. It was a tough field in the fourth hea t, but Bobby Schwartz, the master of the gate, came up with a great start and, after a hard fought bailIe with Shawn McConnell, picked up his four points. Randy'DiFrancisco was third with Jesse Finch fourth. Lucero came bact< in the second round to again post the win over McConnell, Furman and John DeFries. Northup came alive and put four points in his coffer as he outran Ayers, Finch and Oxley. Faria, with his very strong motor, outran Aden, Eddie Castro and Baur to go two for two. Schwartz was letting no grass grow under his feet as he, too, collected his second win, topping Pearce, DiFrancisco and Ackroyd. The final round again had Lucero leading the way and this time Furman, Ackroyd and Baur got to follow him home. McConnell was well on his way to winning the second heat when he snapped a master link and had to watch as Finch took the win followed by Oxley and Jones. McConnell's bad luck seems to continue in Bakersfield, as last time he lost a motor on the last tum of the last lap about 10 yards from the finish. Faria was on track for his mainevent start as, like Lucero, he pulled off the hat trick. Pearce, Northrup and Ayers rounded out the field. Schwartz wasn't going to be denied his grand slam as he showed Aden, Castro and DiFrancisco how it's done. The main event field was set. Schwartz drew the pole with Lucero next to him in gate two. Pearce was in the center in three with Aden in four and Faria against the wall in five. On the first attempt at a start, veteran Faria snookered Aden into the tapes and Aden was out. On the second try, Faria read the gate perfectly and had over a bike length's jump on the rest of the field. That was all he needed, and with the strong RusseJl Racing motor, nobody could touch him. It was a much closer battle for second between Schwartz and Lucero, with Lucero trying to slip under Schwartz in the comers only to have the door closed. It was a drag race for the finish line with the nod going to Schwartz. Pearce tailed the rest of the field in fourth. Bakersfield resident Bryan Thompson won the Support main over Dave Worthen and Paul B~qwt. ~ Results SCR: I. Mike FaN (CM); 2. Bobby Schwartz (GM); 3. SteYe lucero (Jaw): •. lUck Pea1U OillW); s.
