lap. This included yet another five on
the second section. It was, in fact, to
prove his bogey section as he failed to
conquer it all weekend. His Sunday total
of 10 here compared to Kuroyama's
amazing clean and one, and Colomer's
six effectively lost him first place for the
second day running.
.
Colomer was shadowing him again
with 15, while Kuroyama suddenly
looked menacing with a score of 20.
Lampkin got the jump on these two
with his brilliant clean on the third section, which only HRC ricier Fujinami
was to match. Tarres dropped off the
pace with a lap of 24, but young Cobos
was proving that there was no luck
involved with his opening day's fifth
place and th.at he was right back in the
frame.
It was the final loop of the day that
was to tum things upside down as the
Kuroyama revival really hit top gear
and his lQ-mark effort was to be the best
of the weekend. Despite fiving the very
first section, cleaned by Lampkin and
oned by Colomer, the tiny Japanese
bounced straight back to take the sole
clean of the day on the second. After
that his ride was close to perfection,
spoiled only by ones on the sixth and
eighth and a two on the ninth, to end his
day on a total of 30 which was just
enough to rob Colomer of the win he
desperately wanted in front of his home
crowd.
Lampkin, in contrast, finished with
his worst loop score of the weekend,
although in all fairness, at the level he
was riding it hardly comprised a
blowout. Nevertheless, to drop from an
almost certain first place to third on the
day was a bit of a shock to the Brit. The
overall win kept him upbeat.
"This is a great resul t for me, to come
to Spain and win," Lampkin said. "I did
slip up a little on the final circuit; maybe
I relaxed a little too soon. I had kept it
together perfectly aU weekend until
then. Kenichi played a blinder on the
last lap, though."
Colomer wasn't so happy.
"This is not bad
for me," Colomer
said. "I am only one
point behind Dougie,
but sure, I am disappointed because I
wanted to win for all
my fans in Spain.
There are many trials
left so we will just
have to start again."
Coming
from
nowhere to third,
Kuroyama proved
that missing out on
the indoor season
has o,bviously done
him no harm while
Tarres' result is pretty ea y to analyze.
Exactly as predicted,
Tarres can't live with
Colomer and Lampkin on clean rides
alone. He is aiming at consistency, keeping the marks down to ones and twos,
but On Sunday this Simply wasn't good
enough and the young guns swamped
him.
David Cobos, Gabriel Reyes and Fujinami are a whole new generation and
the e guys are going to be up there all
season, jamming the top six and on
occasion getting right in there with a
shot at the top three. Jarvis too also
showed that on occasion. he is going to
turn in a really threatening ride.
Spaniards Amos Bilbao, Joan Pons
and Brit Steve Colley all suffered the
frustration of watching the young pretenders upstage them, and unless they
show some serious Tarres-Iike application it is something they are going to
have to learn to live with.
So, the pattern is set - Lampkin and
Colomer continue their personal headto-head battle that raged all last year,
right through the winter and on into
another year. But Kuroyama has shown
that the pack can get in there if they are
prepared for the fight.
