Buckelew plans to make his debut in the 12Scc class at the Branson motocross championships in early October, contesting both the 125cc Intermediate and Schoolboy classes. Team Green riders dominated the younger age divisions with riders Chase Reed, James Stewart and Mike Alessi. Reed handled the field in the 12-13 age bracket with relative ease while rising star Stewart beat up on the 80cc (7-11) ranks. Alessi served notice that he has healed from his broken arm by capturing three class victories in the 60cc (6-8) Stock and Modified divisions and the SOcc (7-8) Mod class title. Of the three, Stewart seemed to stand out, rebounding from crash-riddled starts by charging to the front of the field on his FMF-tuned KX80s in most every race. Only local favorite Kyle Partridge could keep Stewart in sight for most of the motos, but Stewart's aggressive, powerful riding style let him to prevail for the overall wins in both the 80cc (7-11) Stock and Modified classes. Pee Wee politics was the only way to describe the utter chaos that has become almost synonymous with the SOcc divisions. After Cobra rider Brandon Large soundly trounced the competition on his new CMSO in the SOcc (4-6) Modified class, he attempted to ride the very same machine in the stock division as well. The only problem was that Cobra did not produce enough CM50 units to meet the homologation requirement of 200 units in operation by the first week of April '97. The net result was that numerous protests were filed and Large was stripped of his Stock (4-6) championship. Joseph Marburger, who rode an Action motorcycle, was later awarded the victory after most of the top five riders in the class were disqualified for participating on illegal machines. Large's parents promised to appeal the decision with legal counsel. On the brighter side, KTM 50cc rider Dennis Jonon and Cobra rider Mike LaPaglia had a good old-fashioned battle down to the wire in the 50cc (7-8) Stock class.. LaPaglia won by a wheel length in the moto and collected his first National Championship. Former mini champ Billy Payne powered his Pro Circuit-backed Thousand Oaks Kawasaki KX into the 125cc Open division. Payne mixed it up with another former mini champ, Travis Pastrana, for the week's top honors. Pastrana, who has broken more than 10 different bones in the past two years, looked fast, strong and eager to win, but smaIl setbacks all week locked him out of the winners circle. ~ (Above) Davi Millsaps (59) emerged from the pack to claim the 50cc (6-9) championship. (Left) Mike Alessi rebounded from injury to capture three clasa wins in the 60cc division. (Yam); 3. Oscar Valdez (Suz); 4. Donovan Mitchell (Yam); S. Travis Elliott (Kaw). 125 STJ< PRO: 1.
