The FIM has announced a new TV deal for the World Speedway Grands Prix, having signed a four-year contract with the Danish company ordisk Film. The contract, which runs from 1997 to 2000, includes coverage of at least six rounds per season and is estimated to be worth approximately $2 million. The series will be broadcast on the British Sky TV, but no plans for the U.s. have been announced. The proclamation of "at least" six rounds indicates the possible expansion of the series to 10 rounds in the future. There have been suggestions of expansion to include countries such as Africa, America and Japan. After nearly a 20-year absence from dirt track racing, Dudley Perkins HarleyDavidson will return to dirt track racing via its sponsorship of Loral Lake Racing's Paul Bergstrom in the 1997 AMA 883 National Championship Series. Team owners Al Bergstrom and Rod Lake have put together a package that will see Perkin H-D General Manager Jim Belland most noted for his tuning efforts with 1972 AMA Grand ational Champion Mark Brelsford, handling the motor-building chores. Perkins Harley-Davidson has been involved in both dirt track and hillclimbing since the early 19005, and the late Dud Perkins Sr. has been honored by the AMA with an award in his name, which is the highe t recognition that can be given a member by the association. Three-time World Champion and current team owner Wayne Rainey recently drove his specially prepared, handcontrol1ed go-kart around Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California. Although Rainey was clocked at 160 mph over the crest that makes up the track's first turn, he says his new Dan Gurney-built seat needs seatbelts to keep his body in the proper position. Rainey is also considering adding a roll cage. The top teams in the World Superbike Championship will test at the Misano Adriatico circuit in Italy on April 8-9 in preparation for the next round of the series there on April 20. For the second successive year, Rob Muzzy's Kawasaki team was assisted by students and staff members of the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute during the Daytona 200. Six students and two members of the staff parHcipated in qualifying and race activities, including garage setu p and organiza tion, jackman, pit crew, pit board and stop-board duties. "This is a very exciting opportunity for our students to work in a hands-on capacity with a world-class operation such as Muzzy," said Bernie Thompson, MMI director of education. "MMI students had the fantastic opportunity of putting their education to work and proving what they could do in a teclui.ically demanding, high-stress situation. More than 100,000 motorcycle riders are expected to attend the 95th Anniversary Reunion of the Harley-David on Motor Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on June 13, 1998. At a press conference in Daytona Beach, Florida, on March 5, Harley announced that the festivities will take place at the Summerfest grounds in its hometown with most of the activities being fund-raisers for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. "We're not only celebrating 95 years of great Ainerican-made motorcycles, we're celebrating 18 years of support for a great cause - the Muscular Dystrophy Association," said Richard F. Teerlink, chairman and chief executive officer of Harley-Davidson, Inc. "With the help of our riders, we've raised more than $22 million for MDA. Our 90th anniversary reunion activities alone raised $1 million and we hope to repeat that next year with the 95th." The American Supercamp, a school designed to teach road racers the fundamentals of dirt track racing using Honda XR100s, will hold two, two-day schools at Maely's Hotshoe Ranch in Corona, California, on May 2-3 and 4-5, with guest instructors Chris Carr and Pascal Picotte. Fol1owing the California school, an American Supercamp will be held in Atlanta, Georgia on May 16-17 and May 18-19, with guest instructors Carr, Colin Edwards II and Aaron Yates.
