American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) racing. Promoter David Boydstun - along with an impressive crew of volunteers - hosted round two of the AHRMA Speed & Sport National MX Series and round three of the Speed & Sport National Trials Series at Canyon Raceway, just north of Phoenix. Saturday's motocross featured a fun track with altitude changes, a variety of turns, plenty of jumps, 80-degree temperatures and enough sun to please even the Chamber of Commerce. A freeto-everyone barbecue was held Saturday evening, then Sunday's trial saw more of the same weather, and some of the trickiest sections ever thrown at AHRMA competitors. MOTOCROSS Over 180 entries from 13 states and Canada tackled the Canyon course, producing some great racing. In 500cc Expert, Greg Carter took the overall without winning a moto. In the first goaround, a four-way battle for supremacy ended with Mike Halpin finishing just a few lengths ahead of Yamaha-mounted Ed Zornes and Carter. Rojck Price came home fourth, just ahead of Rick Hudson. With the exception of Zornes, all the front-rwmers were Maico-mounted. Moto two saw soft-terrain specialist Hudson come to terms with the hardpacked circuit and earn the win over Carter, Zornes and Halpin. Overall, the order read Carter, Zornes and Halpin. Zornes came back to post a I-I tally Utah's Robert Borg flew his Ossa Stiletto to third In Classic 250cc Expert, and backed that up with a runner-up finish In Classic 125cc at round two of the AHRMA Speed & Sport National MX Series In Arizona. in Over 40 Experts, a class which has evolved into being one of the toughest in AHRMA MX competition. Halpin was second, with BSA B50 rider Robert Poole third. Californian Ken Markling rode his bolt-together Husky 360 to the Classic 500 Intermediate victory, with Colorado's David Van Stelle emerging in second aboard a Ducati 450 RT. Montesa Cappra rider Ken Lusk finished up third. An entire gang of McMinn family members raced, and Tom McMinn won the Over 30 Novice class aboard a Suzuki. Second both times out was Glenn S. McMinn, while 3-4 finishes earned J.W. Carver third overall. . TRIAL Trialmaster Jared Bates threw some tight turns and off-cambers at riders during Sunday's event, which featured eight sections ridden four times each. Every section could be cleaned, but nobody was able to do all of them on every loop. New Mexico's Howard Watts took the Beginner victory, losing just a single dab during the day; Leland Loper was second with a five.
