In other racing action, Bakersfield rider Rick Pearce piloted a Jawa to his first division-one main-event victory as he grabbed the lead after {he first lap and held off a very determined Shawn McConnell to take the eight-man, eightlap Handicap main-event win. Pearce started off the 20-yard lin!! and displaced Brian Pappalardo in turns one and two on lap two to take the lead while McConnell worked his way up from the 40 with Lucero and Oxley in tow from the 50. Pearce somehow broke the spell that Costa Mesa has on its rookie riders by managing to cling to the pole despite McConnell's typically excellent effort to dethrone him, and when all was said and done, Pearce had the victory. "I think we went 15 laps," Pearce joked. "There was 11 lot of pressure out there. This is my first year in first division, and I came to try and win, but there was a lot of pressure with these guys. They've been doing it for years and years. If you don't stay on the pipe here, they'll go right by you." The sidecar main event came down to a shootout between the potent rig of Dwayne Carmont and Richard Talling, and perennial Mission Yamaha favorites John Matherson and Scott Cole. Car- mont and Tailing got the gate, but Matherson and Cole waited for less than a lap before plowing their way by in turn Wee of the clockwise-run course and running off with race. "Starting off against the wall is not the easiest thing to do" swingman Cole sardo "But we got a good start. Winning is never bad." '.'We had to sooop 'em out of the way," Matherson said. "With that particular team you have to ride aggressive. We're happy. It's a good start to the season."
