Thomas rails at Cantamar dunes MX By Jane Truchinskl ROSARITO, MEXICO MAR 2 Brian Thomas was the dominant rider in the combined 250cc Novice/Vet class at round one of the Too Much Fun La Playa Motocross series in Mexico. Thanks to Corona bee!; and many other sponsors, the Cantamar sand dunes were packed with spectators and some of the biggest classes ever. In the combined 250cc Novice/Vet moto one the holeshot went to Joey Lane and Pete Andassy followed in second. Coming from belUnd, Thomas was able to pass a downed Andassy for second. Staying loose and on the gas, Thomas chased after first-place Lane and passed him on the last lap with just three tums to go. The heat intensified in the second moto, which saw Lane again take the holeshot. Thomas tangled with 250cc Novice rider Brian Crane, and the two of them went dow,n sending them to the back of the pack. Regaining his composer, Thomas eventually worked his way through the field to regain the second-place position. With only a few laps remaining Thomas mounted a charge that would eventually put him on the rear tire of Andassy, and on the last lap he was able to squeeze by for the lead and the overall win. In the 250cc- Pro class, Jeff Surwall led at the start of the first moto. Rich Truchinski held fifth at the start and by ihe end of the first lap was in third behind Billy McClintock. Keeping a consistent pace, Truchinski moved around McClintock " on the second lap. Out front it was Swwall who looked to be a runaway winner. Truchinski, -determined to catch the leader, pushed hard and caught Surwall near the end of the moto to take the win. In the second moto, Surwall was again in the lead rounding the first comer. Truchinski was a bit sluggish at the beginning, but with a bit of good luck was able to move quickly into second place when McClintock fell in the third comer. By the fourth lap Truchinski had finally caught Surwall ooly to fall. Surwall regained his straightaway advantage, but going into the second-to-last lap he fell at the end of the long back straight. Truchinski's luck would again hold out and he was able to pass the downed Surwall for the lead and first-place points in round one. Results 125 NOV: 1. Rich Powell (Suz), 2. As the gate fell in the combined Ove.r 3D/Over 4O/125cc/Evoloution I and II classes, Humphreys sprinted to the front with CZmounted Joe Busby, Randy Brown, Buddy Brumneier and Ro'nnie Welch in tow. Things stayed the same until lap two when Welch got by Brumneier and Brown on the same lap. Rick Burgess was on the move and worked up to third by the end of the race. Al the checkers, Hump had a big lead as Busby struggled with an unfamiliar mount, then came Burgess, Welch and "Brown. The starter purposely held the gate in the second Over 3D/Over 4O/125cc/ Evolution I and II moto to throw off the fast starters, and Busby showed nerves of steel as he cleanly ho1eshot the gate. Humphreys was second by the end of lap one, then came Welch, Burgess and Brown. Things ended the same with the only mover being Barry Gurley, who on the last lap moved from 11th to eighth and second Intermediate. In the first combined 250cc molo, Humphreys, Randy Brown, Lawrence Lucia and Brumneier led the group into tum one. The order would remain the same for the rest of the moto for the top four. The only mover was Bobby Lucas, who passed both Mike Patterson and Carl Keller on the last lap to nab fifth overall.
