An Oregon state judge found former
Oregon state politician Wes Cooley, ROregon, guilty of lying about his military record in the state voters' pamphlet
in 1996, according to a report in the
National Journal. In an agreement
worked out with prosecuters, Cooley
did not challenge the facts as presented
by assistant state attorney general
Byron Chatfield. Cooley, 64, was placed
on two years' probation, ordered to do
100 hours of community service and
pay a $5000 fine and $2100 in court
costs. Various documents and witnesses
showed that Cooley never served in
Korea, as he had claimed, Chatfield
said. Cooley, who was first elected to
the House of Representatives in 1994,
withdrew his bid for re-election last
year amid controversy over the voters'
pamphlet and whether his wife had
properly received veterans' survivor
benefits.

nknown 24-year-old Estonian rider Avo Leok shocked the FIM 500cc World
Champion circuit regulars by claiming the overall win at the opening round of
the SOOcc GP MX Series in Lomme!, Belgium, March 23.
Leak rode to consistent 4-2 moto scores to capture the overall victory over Hondamounted Gert-Jan Van Doorn, of Holland, who carded 3-3 moto finishes, and KTM Belgian rider Johan Boonen, who posted an 11-1 on the day.
Englishman Kurt Nicoll rode his factory KTM to fourth overall via a 2-11 tally, and
former champ Joel Smets claimed fifth overall on his factory 'four-stroke Husaberg.
Jacky Martens, of Luxembourg, won the first moto ona 630cc Husqvarna but registered a DNF in the second moto. Defending champ Shayne King of New Zealand had a
quiet day, going 10-8 in the Belgian sand.
Winner Leok, who entered the '97 series as a complete unknown, roosted through'
the brutal, deep sand of Lommel- site of America's first Motocross des Nations victory
in 1981 - aboard a PSM-sponsored Kawasaki. In a true rags-to-riches story, the word
has it that Leak was recently competing in a local Belgian race aboard an old and wellused Honda CRSOO and caught the eye of the PSM - a small Belgian outfit - team manager, who supplied Leok with a new KX500. Apparently, Leak was also in possession
of a Dunlop tire contract but insisted on running Russian-manufactured Barurn tires.
Leak holeshot both motos and hung on for solid scores in both motos.
Also of note, Swede Peter Johansson rode the works Yamaha YZM400 four-stroke to
19-9 results, and American Trampas Parker failed to qualify due to clutch problems
with his 550cc Vertamati.
Defending 250cc MX World Champion Stefan Everts bounced back from his fourthplace showing at the World Championship 250cc MX Series opener the previous week
in Spain to win in Agueda, Portugal, March 23. Everts, aboard an HRC-backed Honda,
carded 2-1 moto scores for the overall win. Finishing second overall was the previous
week's Spanish GP winner Tallon Vohland of the Chesterfield Yamaha team, with 3-4
moto finishes. Third overall was privateer Honda rider Yves Demaria who went 7-3 on
the day. Rounding out the top five were Suzuki Johnson's Marnicq Bervoets an4 Pamo
Honda's Pit Beirer.
Yamaha's Joakim Karlsson won the first moto but finished out of the points in the
second.
Everts now leads the series points chase over Vohland and Bervoets. Frenchman
Sebastien Tortelli, who finished second overall in Spain, did not ride in Portugal
because of an ankle injury.
Yamaha De Carli's Alessio Chiodi came out swinging at the opening round of the
World Championship 125A- MX Series in Jogyakarts, lndonesia, March 23. Chiodi won
both motos, while American Bobby Moore, of the Yamaha Magic Bike team, ended up
second overall with 2-7 showings. Factory TM riders Allesandro puzar and Xavier
Colomer went 3-4, while Yamaha Motor France's Frederick Vialle took fifth.

purpose-built aftermarket dirt track racing chassis, died in Hesperia, California,
on March 12 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Hensley pioneered the specially constructed dirt track chassis when he joined up
with Kenny Watkins and began producing frames under the Sonicweld moniker in the
mid-'60s. Hensley went on to form his own company, Trackmaster Racing Frames, in
Northridge, California, late in 1968, coincidental to the AMA's termination of the 500cc
OHV vs. 750cc sidevalve engine formula in favor of an absolute 750cc displacement
limit for the '69 racing season. Trackmaster produced chassis for all engine brands, the
first swingarm models available for dirt track racing. Factory Triumph star Gene
Romero used a Trackmaster Racing Frame to win the 1970 AMA Grand ational
Championship. Hensley later sold the business and moved to Canada but then resurrected it around 1988 in Hesperia, California, where he continued to fill orders for the
vintage market. His son, Steve, plans to continue the Trackmaster operation.
