Curtis Adams' time and you look at my
time and it was 1.3 mph he was averaging faster around the track than me. So I
just tried to add a mile an hour in every
section of the race track and I caught up
to Chuck. I think if I'm not mistaken,
Chuck's bike was missing in the last two
laps. It didn't have the same squirt up
the front straightaway and the back
chute that it did early on in the race and
I think it was an ailing motor."
W1)ile·it wasn't an ailing motor, poor
carburetion was slowing Graves down,
as well as compounding traction prob. lems he faced.
"I just couldn't get all the grip off the
tire that I was looking for," Graves said.
"And the carburetion was really poor so
it just wouldn't come on smooth and it
would just want to spin the tire on me. I
got off it a few times almost in five and
over the crest of six. I got into eight and
there was a lapped rider and I didn't
just buzz him. I'd figured I'd put some
distance on Sadowski and I was looking
to the side to see, but I couldn't see the
signals from (my crew). And he was
right there and I just didn't have the
motor. I stuffed him going into nine on
the white-flag lap and figured I could
brakes check him and slow him down a
little bit up the front straight, but..."
Batey came out on top' of a battle for
fifth with Mumford and Grigg. Local
racer Mumford thought he might make
the pass on Batey but just didn't have
the power to make it stick.
"1 almost went under him in nine,"
Mumford said. "They'd leave me from
six to eight every time and then I'd catch
right up on them in eight and nine. 1
was going to go under him but then I
figured I'd get in his draft, came out two
inches off his wheel and he still pulled
away, just p~ed out of the draft. I'm
just on a little bike and he's on a big
one."
Grigg finished seventh and wasobviously pleased with what was tpe fourth
pro race of his career and said he can't
wait to receive the leased Raptor Muzzy
is preparing for him to use in the rest of
the series.
"Mumford was going pretty good,"
Grigg said. "1 think I had some motor on
him but we went through traffic and he
got position on me and I think he got
better drive, better gearing, coming out
of nine. A couple times I probably could
have went in on tum one but it would
have been a little iffy. I just wanted to be
safe, race smart with these guys. It's
probably the best weekend of my life."
Fritz Kling came next in an uneventful eighth, relieved to move on to the
rest of the rounds.
"I didn't have any real battles," Kling
said. "I just tried to focus on the next
guy and catch him through most .of both
legs. I really got slammed (on the start)
in the second race. Everybody was
doing all kinds of stuff and I had to hit
the brakes. I'm just glad to get out of
here."
