immediate lead. Healey was still in the lead as they came back into view; behind were Kris Keefer, Jamie Campbell, Steve Hengeveld, Mark Decker and Dima VanStee. Campbell and Decker were on thumpers while Keefer, Hengeveld and VanStee were riding 125s. Keefer had to pit on the third lap because he was using his stock gas tank. That let Campbell move up to second overall. Krause had.now moved up to fourth, then came Decker and VanStee. Hengeveld got tangled up with a rider coming through the sand wash and smashed his pipe. On the next circuit, VanStee got by Decker, and now was in striking distance of Keefer. Lap five had Campbell pit for fuel, moving a hard-charging VanStee to second, with Keefer and Krause right behind. . "1 came by the tower and thought 1 would be okay, but then th~ bike started to sputter, and I turned around to get fuel in the pits," Krause said. VanStee pitted on the next go-round, and as he tried to get out of the pits· Keefer, with the right of way, got back in second. '''1 came back out behind him (Keefer) and we started to dice back and forth," VanStee said. Just when he thought that Healey had the race wrapped up, Campbell came back into the motocross section out in front, with VanStee, ·Keefer and Healey all within 20 seconds of each other. Keefer was able to pull even on VanStee in front of the spectators as he overjumped the small tabletop and then controlled the inside line to complete the pass. But it was for naught, as Keefer had to pull in to top off with fuel to make sure he could make it. Downed riders forced the race to be shortened by one lap, with Campbell first' to take the checkered flag. The fallen rider forced the course to be red ~ flagged temporarily to let paramedics get t.brough. Healey thought the race . was stopped completely and removed his goggles. "1 came up when they had the course red-flagged, and then they waved the course clear and 1 timed it perfect and got to the front," Campbell said. After further review and talking to the lead riders, it was agreed to go back on the scoring, before the riders came upon the red flag.
