Round 7: Sf. A FLAT TRACK FLORIDA FLAT TRACK RACING SERIES (left) Mike Hacker won both the 750 and 600cc main events at St. Augustine Speedway on Thursday night. (Below) Dave Camlin (27) gave eventual winner Hacker a run for it in the 750cc Expert race. Camlin ended up second. (Bottom) Winner Bryan Bigelow (80) and Jeremy Thompson (88) duke it out in the 250cc Pro-Am bout. By Dave Hoenig Photos by Flat Trak Fotos ST. AUGUSTINE, fl., MAR. 6 ike Hacker made the most of the last half-mile race of the Rorida Flat Track Racing Series at the paved surface of St. Augustine Speedway by dominating both the 600 and 750cc Expert mains. His 750cc win pushed the Moroney's Harley-Davidson rider into a series points tie with Will Davis going into the final two rounds of the series at Daytona's Municipal Stadium. Unfounded rumors that this event at St. Augustine Speedway, the seventh round of the series, had been canceled, undoubtedly led to a low rider turnout and the cancellation of the afternoon amateur portion of the program. The 250cc Pro-Am was a barn burner, as Jeremy Thompson got the holeshot over Bryan Bigelow and Brandon Cartwright. Bigelow quickly muscled his way-by Thompson but couldn't'sliake the determined rider. Thompson pushed back to the front with one lap to go, but the Marine Transport-supported Bigelow was not to be denied as he shot back to the front to take an exciting win. The battle for third also went down to the wire with Jeff Landrum finally working his way by Cartwright late in the race. The 600cc Pro-Am main' had to be red-flagged after John Winsett Jr., who was trying to overcome a penalty-row start, hit the hay bales in tum three. After a short time, Winsett was up, repairs to his bike were made, and the race was restarted. Nick Daniels led the pack into turn one with Tim Eades right behind. Eades forced his Burcham's Cycle-backed Rotax to the front as Bigelow came with him. Bigelow was all over Eades, but the Virginia youngster held on. Daniels fell back into a battle with Canadian Ben Rouillard. Rouillard slipped into third as the pair. were joined by Jason Tyer and Jeff Berdan. While Eades kept Bigelow at bay, the war raged on for third. The finishing order behind the lead duo was Rouillard in third, Berdan fourth, Tyer fifth and Daniels sixth. Entries for the 883 Harley-Davidson class were sparse and were further depleted when Donnie Krusinski was unable to get his Sportster to go. Bartel's Harley-Davidson teammates Johnny Murphree and Shaun Russell continued their class domination; with Murphree taking the win over Russell. Doug Beattie finished third. Hacker wasted no time taking command of the 600cc Expert main. Billy Martin led Dave Camlin and Willie McCoy in the chase of Hacker. McCoy, who was making his first ride of the week, took over second on lap five. It was now a four-rider contest for second, as Martin, Camlin and Steve Beattie were all taking shots at McCoy. Lap nine found Camlin flashing into second, but it was temporary as Carnlin's Rotax coughed, and he faded from contention. McCoy now held a solid second with Martin holding off a closing Robert Lewis. Hacker eventually scored the easy win followed by McCoy and Martin. The all-important 750cc Expert main was the last to the line. Michigan rookie Jeff Randolph carne off the line first only to have Carnlin blast by at the end of lap one. Randolph held down second with Hacker working desperately to get around ReciJ Hart before Camlin could getaway. Hacker picked up a position a lap until taking oyer the lead at the halfway point. At this point, the race was all but over. "Mike had us covered. If the race had lasted 15 laps more, there still would not hav.e been anything I could have done," Carnlin said of his futile chase of his teammate. Randolph was able to keep third over a fast-closing Robert Lewis. Paul Lynch, Hart, Steve Beattie, Dale Jenneman, Mike Varnes, Troy Thames and Steve Gill rounded out the field, in that order. l~ Sl Augustine Speedway Sl Augustine, Aoricla Results: March 6, 1997 (Round 7 01 9) 750 EJ(, 1.
