alifornia's Tony "the Tiger"
Meiring came up the big
winner, riding to wins in
six classes as Amateur riders from all over North
America descended on
Daytona Beach's Municipal Stadium.
With over 500 entries for the eighth
annual American Motorcycle Institutesponsored Southeast Amateur/Youth
Regional Championship, the slightly
banked, hard-packed quarter-mile oval,
home of the Grand National Championship opener, is always a challenge for
the young and old alike.
Beautiful weather continued for the
1997 Dayton,!, Bike Week with a large
field of riders and spectators turning out
for Sunday's event, which also was a
Vintage National. Rider turnout was
down on Monday, but both days of racing were concluded before 10 p.m.
Meiring rode to wins in the 125cc,
85cc 12- to 15-year-old and 85cc DTX
classes. Meiring's 125cc wins came at the
expense of Brady Miller and Jason DiSalvo. Mike Mashewske was a consistent
third both days. In the 85cc 12-. to 15year-old class, Rob Pearson collected second both days over Corey Hormes and
DiSalvo. In the 85cc DTX class it was
Tom Link and Mike Alexander in second
and third on Sunday, while Alexander
and DiSalvo stalked Meiring on Monday.
Almost as successful was Kentucky's
Nicky Hayden, who went undefeated in
the 504cc and Open classes. Young
Bryan Bigelow made the trip down from
Michigan worthwhile as he continued to
rack up advancement points in large
bunches, winning three of the four
ProfAm races.
On Sunday Hayden beat Jon Hanson
and Cory Roth in the 504cc main and
Greg O'Boyle and Aaron Scheid in the
open race. Monday it was Phillip Wolf
and Mike Kolenda foHowing in the
504cc while Scheid and Canadian Francois Dumas pursued in the open.
Bigelow's only setback came in Sunday's 250cc Pro-Am race. Both Roy
Miller and Robert Weiss topped
Bigelpw, though Bigelow came back on
.Monday and beat Miller and Tom
McGraneJr.
The 600cc class belonged to Bigelow
both days as John Winsett Jr. and Tom
Buzzi took the place and show positions. Roy Miller was back after Bigelow
on Monday, but to nO avail as he finished second while Paul Normandin
slid home third.
