took to the speedway on Monday as well. Former three-time AMA Grand ational Champion Jay Springsteen picked up his first road race victory on a Harley~Davidson in over 15 years when he piloted his exotic, Evo-powered Sundance Racing Project entry to the win in the Battle of Twins Formula Two class after a brief early battle with the Ducatimounted Ron Barton. "It worked really well," Springsteen said. '1t wiggled a little bit on the banking and through the switchbacks after turn one. They had a rev limiter on it . this time, because when I rode it in Japan I kept overrevving it. But it was -great to see a Harley-Davidson win here again. The last time I won on a Harley here was on "Lucifer's Hammer" (The Harley factory BOTT bike). I think it was 1980." Kiwi Andrew Stroud.and the awesome Britten Vl000 dominated the BOT Open class once again, while in the same race Jay Richardson led a fi verider pack of MZ Skorpions across the line to win the inaugural Skorpion Cup event at the speedway. Earlier in the day Henning dominated the 250cc GP vintage event on his Honda 350 four-stroke twin. "I didn't really expect to handle 'em (the 250s), but I've got the 350 singing," Henning said. "It was making almost 48 horsepower on the dyno yesterday, so it's really working. I was just going around, listening to the motor and watching traffic. It was pretty uneven tfu!." The 500cc Sportsman was less so. Henning was at the front of the SOOcc Sportsman for much of the race, but it wasn't .until the sixth and final lap that he truly picked up the pace. That's when he pushed his 1972 Honda CB450 to a decided edge over James McGregor (I969 Honda 350) and racked up his 421st race win. "Yeah, it's gratifying to ·be able to come to a race of this stature and win, not once but twice (By unofficial count, this is Henning's 421st victory.) I've got to thank my crew. I don't know why they take the abuse," Henning said. "They could go be galley slaves and get treated better than they do. They get up early, they stay up late - I give them half a warm beer on Thursdays. But I couldn't de it without 'em. I race six (Above) Jay Springsteen took the win in the Battle of Twins Formula Two class aboard the Harley-Davidson Evo-powered Sundance Racing Project machine. (Above right) New Zealand's Andrew Stroud rode to the win in the Battle of Twins Open class, well clear of the rest of the field. (Right) Sven Bley (83) leads eventual winner Jay Richardson (13) and the rest in the Sisorpion Cup race. classes. I bring three motors and four frames and they do the rest." Henning hoped to get win number 422 in the 750cc Sportsman class, but Rob Tuluie had other ideas. Henning and Tuluie split from the 44-rider field right from the start, the .' pair evenly matched even though there was a considerable disparity in their equipment. Tuluie was on his Big D Cycle 1973 Triumph T-140 750, w.hile Henning rode "his 1972 Honda CB450. Tuluie first took the lead on the fourth lap. Henning came back at him, then Tuluie took it again on the fifth. He was able to stretch out about a five-bikelength advantage on the fifth lap, then added to it to win by about 10 lengths. Over 35 seconds later, John Ellis rode his 1973 Yamaha 750 across the line, then came 1972 Norton 750-mounted Jim Struke. c:N Daytona International Speedway Daytona Beach, Florida Results: March 3-4, 1997 200 GP: 1.
