(Left) Bryan Huth (7) charges to the eocc Beginner-class win in San Bernardino, California. (Above) Mark Wagner flies over a stadium jump on his way to the overall 125cc Pro win at Montrose, North Carolina. Johnson bounded out to a huge advantage in the second-moto but overcooked the first tum and went from first to_last in one awkward move. This gave the holeshot to Tim Stokes, who was foUowed in the first lap by Riker, Chuck Herbstreith, Clawitter, and Young. Johnson made some good passes in the first lap but stalled in a tight turn to end up sixth. Jeremy Noah worked up from last on the start to finish fifth. Clawitter rode consistently to a respectable fourth. Stokes rode fast but made som~ costly mistakes to finish third. Second went to Young who jumped past riders all over the track but could not catch Riker, who took the overall win, followed by Clawitter, Johnson, oah and Stokes. Young was scored in the"125cc B class. Results 80 before the Cooper jump. Minor moved around Goolsby by the third lap and pressured Thorp for the next couple of laps tn take over fifth at the white flag. McDaniel scored a comfortable win over Garcia, with Perez, Huth and Minor rounding out the top five. The fll'St Vet Novice moto saw Garth Tarlow work his way from seventh to second. He handicapped himself in the second moto, riding a 125 compared to most of the field on 250s and he started in fifth. Out in front were Jim Mangold, Jerry Jetton, Ed Bustillos and Mike Dunlap. Mangold went down in the canyon section, giving Jetton the lead. Tarlow moved around Dunlap as they came back toward the tower, then moved around Bustillos coming down Animal Leap. Jetton went down at the sweeper leading to the Cooper jump. Tarlow was in front as they headed toward the canyon, when Bustillos laid his bike down, handing second to Dunlap. Eddie Rea and Jettnn both got by Dunlap, and Jetton made his way around Rea. The OCS-sponsored Tarlow. took the win, followed by Jetton, Rea, Dunlap and Bruce Mortenson. Results . 125 D: 1. Wagner wins Montrose MX By Andy Morton MONTROSE, NC, JAN. 26 The action started off hot at Montrose Moto-X Park with Mark Wagner taking top honors in the 125cc Pro class. Chuck Shirley rounded the first right-hand sweeper of the first moto in the number~one position with Mark Wagner close by in second. Behind them were Chris Wagner and Paul Blackwelder, respectively. Not present was Troy Brewer, who was in the pits repairing his CRl25, which had seized up in the practice session. This left the others to battle it out for the cash. Before the hard-charging foursome could reach the fourth tum, Mark Wagner had uncharacteristically fallen in the Montrose sand and Chris Wagner had taken the lead. With a hardcharging Shirley on his tail, Chris was only able to maintain the lead for the firstlap. By lap two, Shirley was pulling a good lead while second place was being fought for by the two Wagners. Yamaha pilot Mark Wagner, on a mission to catch the now-distant Shirley, was holding the throttle wide open at all costs. The price happened to be another downed rider. By the end of the first moto, Mark Wagner had fallen three times and Shirley had taken an easy victory with Chris Wagner, Mark Wagner and Paul Blackwelder filling out the top four spots. The second moto was a new lineup. Absent were Shirley and Chris Wagner, who finished first and second in moto one. Shirley was bitten by the uphill whoop section in the 250cc Pro class while Wagner took a shot in the Over 25 A class. . This made things interesting for the remaining riders. And if this wasn't enough change, Troy Brewer was now ready to tangle with the remaining 125cc Pro class. Mark Wagner took the holeshot with Blackwelder second and Brewer third. At the halfway mark on the first lap, Brewer had passed both riders for first place with the other two close behind. But Brewer's bad luck continued as his Honda seized again before lap's end, leaving Wagner·with the lead, the moto win, the overall win and the cash. Results 50: 1. Ji\50n Taylor (Yam); 2. Hann Hot at Milwaukee AX By Ray Woods MILWAUKEE, WI, FEB. 9 Outside the temperatures hovered around 20 degrees, but inside the Mecca Center in Milwaukee Wisconsin, the race action was very hot as CTI-backed Thomas Hann out of Belpree, Kansas, ran away from the competition en route to the overall win in the 60cc (7-11) division at the 11th round of the Mike Kidd/PJ1 National Arenacross series. The field of 32 riders was whittled down tn 15 for the main event through three qualifiers, transferring the top three directly to the main event, and two semi qualifiers that saw an additional three riders from each go to second-row starts for the main. Hann dominated the third qualifying heat, which was also the fastest, giving him gate pick for the main over first-quaIifier winner Kody Molitor and second-qualifier winner TuI Racing's Justin Kelly. The final Iin.eu.p for the 60cc class included some of the fastest minibike riders in the Midwest as once again Hann ripped the holeshot followed closely by Thor-sponsored Will Hicks from Dewitt, Michigan. Hicks fought hard to stay with Hann through the whoops, but Hann was impressive as he doubled and tripled his way through, stretching his lead every lap. On the second pass through the whoops, Hicks bobbled slightly, giving Molitor the advantage he needed for the pass at the end of this very tricky section. For the next three laps these two battled back and forth until Hicks got sideways in the double-double section. giving Molitor enough brea thing room to secure second. At the flag a very strong Hann took the win over Molitor and Hicks with Robert Lo.ire and Justin Kelly rounding out the top five. Hann went on to win the 85cc (7-11) class over Kody Molitor, Chris Riesenbu.rg, Larry Klinger and Justin Kelly. Another multiple class winner and arenacross tough guy was Nick Metcalf, who took top honors in the 125cc Open, 250cc Open and 250cc Intermediate. Only a second-place finish in thel25cc Intermediate class spoiled his perfect day. Results 50 (4-6): I. Dian Klinger (LEM); 2. Jake EricksOn (Act); 3. Chad Wilson 0CfM); 4. Tyler Plummer (KTM); 5.
