of
position and never folded, with third
going to Evans. Jake Windham and
Myers rounded out the top five.
By the time the second 125cc Pro
moto rolled around, Ryan had already
been on the track for four motos worth
of racing with little rest in between. Perhaps that excuses his slow start in the
moto, which resulted in Ryan chasing
Evans, Pestana, Scott Davis and Windham around for the first lap.
Evans led the early going before
eventually falling to seventh, but Ryan
quickly found his rhythm and, one by
one, Evans, Windham, Davis and Pestana all were overtaken by Ryan. By
mid-moto, Ryan had the purse sewed
up. The battle behind Ryan, however,
·was a berm burner with Davis, Windham, Pestana and Myers banging bars
repeatedly before eventUally finishing in
th~t same order.
Scott Myers holeshot the 250cc Pros'
fiist moto, with Ryan right behind him.
Windham, Davis, Evans and Pestana
also were quick starters and, as the race.
progressed, these riders distanced themselves from the rest of the pack, resulting in a six-rider shootout for the lead.
Ryan found the advantage h~ needed
in an old-fashioned obstacle: the backside mudhole. Ryan's impeccable mud
skills enabled him to glide through the
ever-deepening hole and he parlayed
the advantage into a pass on Myers.
Myers chased Ryan from second place
for the remainder of the moto.
Behind the leaders, Davis, Pestana
and Windham fought for the remaining
Pro cash. Davis put a move on Windham and, once in third, defended it successfully for the duration.
The fight for fourth really heated up
01) the last lap, with Pestana first grabbing the spot from Windham. Windham
retaliated by going for huge air off the
triple, effectively leaping back into the
money position. The move seemed to
surprise Pestana, who had no answer.
And so, with that pass climaxing the
contest, the order was set and the final
tally read Ryan, Myers, Davis,· Windham and Pestana.
Davis dominated the early action as
he led the opening laps of the second
250cc Pro moto. Davis, from neighboring Yuba City, had the hometown fans
on their feet as he held off repeated challenges from Myers, Windham, Ryan and
Pestana.
On the track's farthest corner, Windham moved to within inches of secondplace Myers before parting company
\Vith his Suzuki in grand fashion. As the
race continued under yellow flags,
Windham was checked by paramedics.
Ultimately, the flags were lifted and
Windham was pronounced okay.
Davis increased his lead when Myers
and Ryan were slowed by Windham's
face-plant, but it was short-lived. Davis
raced well, but soon Ryan began to close
up the distance and suddenly was
knocking on Davis' rear fender. There
was just no denying Ryan this day. With
three laps remaining, Ryan took the lead
and proceeded to take the win. Myers
slipped by Davis on the last lap to take
second, 'with Pestana and Cliff Cook
completing the top five.
Ryan's winning ways didn't stop
until he had also won the Over 25 and
Over 30 Pro classes. Altogether, Ryan
won an incredible eight straight
motos.
The Golden State Nationals traditionally attracHhe West's best amateur
racers, and this year was no exception.
Most impressive in the hotly contested
125cc Intermediate class was Team'
Green rider Brett Racine, who put his
Kawasaki on a pace so brisk that his
lap times were comparable with the
Pros'.
Only fractionally less rapid was
NCY-sponsored Donovan Mitchell, who
actually closed in on leader Racine in
the. late part of the second moto, but it
wasn't quite enough and Mitch.ell had to
be content with second both for the
motos and overall score. Consistent
third-place finishes ensured Hawk
White of third overall.
In the 250cc Intermediate contest, the
outcome was much less certain as a
number of racers took turns up front.
Pacing the field off the gate in moto. one
was Josh Chisum. Chisum led Monty
Ware and Jesse Bath for two laps before
Bath charged past and took the lead.
Once out front, Bath was never ,challenged and continued on to take the win
over Chisum, Auggie Rodriguez, Seth
Young, Ware and the rest.
Rodriguez holeshot the second
molo, followed by Ware, Bath, Young
and Chisum. During the opening laps,
Rodriguez began to pull away while
behind him, Bath was held up by the
excellent defensive riding tactics of
Ware. Bath slipp.ed by Ware on lap
three, and once clear of that challenge,
Bath was able to close the gap on
Rodriguez. Midrace was the turning
point as Rodriguez fell while dicing for
the lead with B'ath. With clear track
ahead, Bath roosted to win handily
. over Young, Chisum, Cory Morais and
Ware.
