to put the time in training; you just have
to do it, that's all there is to it."
Despite having his sole computer
quit while heading out for the second
loop, 'Lafferty nonetheless kept his cool,
played it smart and came up with a 20point total for second overall.
The Quicksilver marked the national
debut for Hawkins and his Yamaha
YZ250. He also experienced computer
problems - except with his, the mounting screws backed out and he ended up
losing his entire "dashboard" at the
beginning of the last loop.
"1 started riding really good after the
first gas," Hawkins said. "I got to ride
the bike pretty fast at the end; we just
had problems. 1 can't complain or anything. This is just the first race. I've got a
lot more, so I'mexcited about it."
KTM-mounted Patrick Garrahan
topped the "locals" with his sixth overall, second 250cc A.
"I had a lot of fun," he noted, ''but 1
burned that fourtn check by 10 rninu tes
(he wasn't the only one who burned it),
and that dropped me way back, so from
there 1 just tried to have fun and wasn't
worried about the scores so much. Actually, this race you just go fast the whole
time; you don't have to do a whole lot of
timekeeping. You look down (at your
instruments) every couple miles and
notice you're still late and just keep
going."
One rider of note who won't keep
going - at least in the enduro series - is
Davis. After spending the last few years
chasing that title (he won it in '95), he'll
concentrate on the AMA National Hare
& Hound Series, Best in the Desert's Silver State Series and the AMA's FourStroke National MX Series. The fact that
he's leading three different national
series at this pOint isn't enough to make
him change his focus'.
"I think in '95 1 did the same thing. I
think I won everything, even the GNCC
(opener in Florida). That's the next one I
want to do; I want to win Ocala. Me and
(Scott) Summers and (Scott) Plessinger
and all those guys '- it'll be a good race, I
think. That's the one to win.
"I went to Hollister last weekend (for
the National Bare Scrambles kickoff,
which he won) and rode with the best
Suzuki guys. I came here and rode with
the best enduro guys. I've had a good
year so far."
