On lap two, Carmichael moved by Johnson and had Bowen in sight. Carmichael slowly closed on Bowen, and on lap four made his move for the eventual win. "Bowen was in a hurry and ] didn't want to get over my head," Carmichael said. Bowen clung tenaciously to second and held off Boyeson, Johnson and Mike Treadwell at the end. "Lappers were starting to get to me at the end," Bowen said."] was glad to hold on to second." "Hey] got a good start and didn't fall," Boyesen said. "Bowen was very impressive today." Bowen unloaded the KTM 620 that he rode to a second-place finish in the Four-Stoke National series and put it to work in the Vet Pro class. • "] lined up as far away as ] could from Bowen," eventual class winner Earl May said. "If the sound didn't deafen you, the giant rooster tail will wipe you out." Bowen thundered out of the gate into an instant start that materialized into a big win. "After] got used to the big fourstroke, ] think that it is easier to race than a two-stroke," Bowen said. ''I'm not that tired." Second place was passed down from Pat Barton to Matt Crown before moto's end. "We can't spot Bowen that kind of a lead again," May said. Bowen roosted the field off the gate again and,. at the end of lap one, it was Bowen, Crown, May and Mark Beamer. Bowen then erred on lap two and he found himself in third place. "] followed Crown and May, and they were really banging each other for the lead," Bowen said. "But they were gaining on me by using the elevator jump." On the next lap, Bowen wicked up the throttle on the 620, and soared onto the plateau at the .end of the "elevator." Bowen caught May with two laps to go and picked off Crown on the final lap for an impressive victory. May's third overall was plenty to add the Vet Pro championship to his Over 30 A championship. Saturday's Amateur program was a mudfest and, after one moto, the program was concluded. . "The Minis could not get up the steep hills, and it was too bad to continue," Worldsport's Jerry West said.
