eith Johnson scored the overall
win in 125cc Intermediate Division
1 and took second in 250cc Intermediate at round two of the GFI Winter
MX Series South at Lemongrove.
"Back home there is a few feet of
snow on the ground and it's about 17
degrees:' Johnson said before the races
got under way. "So this time each year
we hit a few of the big California races
to keep in touch with the competition
and to keep practicing."
Johnson and Team Chaparral's
Danny Carlson mixed it up in the I25cc
Intermediate ranks with Johnson coming out on top. Johnson returned for a
well-earned second-place finish in the
250cc Intermediate class behind mud
master Darrin Hoeft. Jason Wood was a
consistent third while Team Thousand
Oaks Yamaha's Andy Anaya and Ron
Gilbert rounded out the top five.
Two grizzled veterans of motocross
came out of retirement today and left as
winners of the Over 40 divisions. Former Can-Am factory racer Joe Root
piloted his O'Neal-backed Kawasaki to
the overall victory in the Over 40
Novice race while Mark White hammered the Over 40 Experts with a double-moto romp of the class. White
topped Kenny 2ahrt and "Wild" Chet
Malito in the Over 40 Experts while
Root handled Mike Denberry and WaIter Miles in the ovice ranks.
Mark Allen celebrated his first race
K
30
as an Over 25-year-old with a win today
in the Over 25 Intermediate division.
Allen was hooked up all day by pulling
full-wheelie holeshots aboard his
Kawasaki of Simi Valley-backed KX125.
Allen topped Greg Pierce and Craig
Monty on the day's overall finish.
Rusty Holland was top dog in the
250cc Pro division by simply blowing
away the 22-rider field during the single IS-lap feature race. Spud WaIters
shook off early challenges from Dustin
elson to secure the runner-up position
while the king of Hollister, Tyler Evans,
went on to finish a surprise third in
front pf Don Upton and Japanese racer
Taka Atsuta. Holland, however, could
not duplicate his fine ride in the 250cc
division in the I25cc ranks. He was a
victim of first-lap chaos and wound up
fighting his way forward for most of the
moto.
In the end, Holland worked up as
high as sixth before retiring for the day.
Spud Walters went on for the victory in
front of elson, European racer Erik
Camerlengo, Don Upton and Simi
Kawasaki racer Billy Mercier.
The 15-year-old future pro Justin
Buckelew flew to an llwesome fourmoto sweep of both 80cc Experts and
Supermini divisions. Even though the
California boys tried to gang up on
Buckelew, he came away clean on his
Dean Dickinson-tuned R&G Race
Engine Yamaha. In the end, Buckelew
outsmarted, outrode and outdassed his
competitors en route to his double class
victory.
Buckelew topped "Showtime" Sean
Hamblin and Team Green's R.J. Thompson in the Supermini ranks while Team
Thousand Oaks Yamaha/Silkolene/

Jonathan Shimp was second-fastest in
the 80cc Experts.
