could never make the pass. At one point on the white-flag lap, Krause fell about five bike lengths back because of tappers. Fortunately for Krause, Musgrave had his own problem with lappers. "Over in the mud bogs, there are only a few lines and if people get stuck in them, you're screwed," Krause said. "Willy got bottled up just like I did in the Vet race and I just went around him. Then it was my tum to battle lappers." Lapped traffic was not the only thing Krause had to battle. Musgrave caught up to Krause's rear wheel before the checkered flag, but this time Krause used the lappers to his advantage by putting other riders between him and Musgrave. At the finish, it was Krause taking the checkered flag. uWe're even now/' exclaimed Krause, who had nothing but praise for' the race. "The course was awesome, great traction for Carlsbad. There was traction everywhere." Most riders had the same reaction as Krause. Even the guy dressed as Santa Claus, who looked like someone had used his beard for traction, was all jollies. .
