BROOKSVILLE, FL, NOV. 17 Bryan Jones roared back with a new bike and repaired knee to take the Advanced-class win in the third round of the Florida Trials Association· season. In a class that saw scores as high as 158 in the challenging advanced lines, Jones dropped only 33 points in the four-loop, eight-section trial. The trial, held at the Crooms OHV Park by the Central Florida Club, took advantage of classic Crooms obstacles such as "Stone Mountain." This is a laJ;ge hill made from pieces of limestone that were piled up during early mining operabons. Oub director Brock Sattlemeier wanted to throw a variety of terrain at the riders, and Jones drew on his prior. rock- and log-climbing experience in the Northeast to eam the win. Also scoring his first win of the season, Jack Stites regained his familiar spot at the top of the Expert class as he flew over some of the most varied obstacles seen this year. Like Jones, Stites had years of National competition and northern riding to help him over the slippery rocks on Stone Mountain and the numerous logs. Second-place Expert Chuck Walker kept it close, but admitted "I've got to learn to ride those rocks." For the experts, Stone Mountain was the hardest section. The most im.pressive win of the day went to Rich Lomano, who rode his tired but trusty Honda to first place in the Senior B class. For the Senior B, Senlor A and Intermediate classes, the decisive section was number three, where a climb up a narrow gully ended with a 100degree floating turn over roots, then a highspeed drop downhill and sharp lBO-degree tum. in the famous Florida sand. 1£ the roots didn't get you, the soft sand usually did. Only class wmners Lomano, Glen Buzze and George Edwards were able to keep their points below 30 after facing this difficult section. Results EX: 1. Jack Stites (G-C); 2. Chuck Walker (Bet); 3. Thomas tops Marion MX By Kyle Myers REDDICK, FL, NOV. 9 Jason Thomas scored a hat trick by winning all three classes he competed in at the Motocross of Marion. County. . Thomas won all six motos in the 16- to 24year-old, 125cc A and the Pro divisions as over 160 riders competed on this cool day of racing action. "In the first Pro moto, john Fesler jumped out to the early lead with Thomas, Ronnie Renner, Travis Blackburn and BjUy Wood following. Thomas pressured Fesle.r for the point position, but Fesler handled the pressure well until lap three, when Thomas slipped by on the outside. Once in the lead, Thomas pulled away to take the win. With two laps to go, Fesler's arms begin to pump severely and he let Renner race by and into the runner-up position. Fesler held on for third over "Blackburn and Rob McWhorter. Thomas led the field into turn one to start mota two with Renner, Blackburn, Fesler and McWhorter in hot pursuit. Blackburn, on his 250cc machine, motored by Renner on his 125cc bike on the opening circuit. Thomas cruised'out front about three seconds ahead of Blackburn the entire seven-lap moto. Renner, Fesler and McWhorter rounded out the top five spots. Bryan johnson and Davi Millsaps battled in both 60cc motos. They were the only 60cc riders to clear both the tabletop jumps. Millsaps flew to the opening-moto win as johnson trailed behind. In race two, Johnson had the upper hand and scored the win over Millsaps and Jimmy Keys. Results P/W (4-6): 1. T.J. Rhonelli (KTM); 2. RED MOUNTAIN, CA, OCT. 27 Rovers Motorcycle Club member Paul Krause convin~ingly won the 17th annual Training' Wheels MC Ghost Rider Enduro. Krause beat his closest competitor by a full two minutes after zeroing the brutal event held near Red Mountain, California. Krause set the stage by hitting the first two tie-breaker checks right on the money with perfect zeroes. He continued to come in right on time throughout the day, leaving both his competition and the host club shaking their heads in disbelief. The Team Green star's closest call was at the second-ta-Iast check, where he ntissed a bum by just three seconds. The 44-.mile first loop had a 20.mph average, so most riders were able to stay on time. The course first visited Spangler Hills with a pass through the annual "Pumpkin Patch" and a tri,p down "Big Sandy." A quick run through what District 37 racers call the "Slot Car Track" completed the first circuit. Loop two was a 4O-miJe affair with a 23 mph average. Most of the top 20 riders remained on schedule. The course paralleled Searless Road· before heading to "Hanna's Hole" for more hilly terrain. Riders were then sent zigzagging through the "moon rocks" in the old mining area before hitting the sand hills and a trip up Teagle Wash to end the loop. Experts and Amateurs then gassed up for the final 25-mile third loop, which sported· a 24 mph average. The course circled Rock Mountain and mainly consisted of off-camber uphills and downhills with plenty of rocks. A fair number of top riders dropped points at check "P" when they topped the blind hill a little on the warm side. Krause claimed the overall with a final tally of 0.0047 on his J
