Sprankle spanks Honda Hills MX By Rupert F. Pellett LINVILLE, 011, OCT. 26 Billy Sprankle splashed his way through the mud and goop of a rainy motocross to capture a hard-earned win in the 6Scc class. While condi- tions were decent for practice, the skies poured forth for the races, and the well-prepared track was moistened Hke a Betty Crocker cake batter. In moto one of the 6Scc contest, Sprankle jammed his way to a nice holeshot in front of William "Okey" Johnson, with Jacob Mohney in third, Sprankle quickly stretched his lead around the high banks of Honda Hills' famous berms, and pulled away for the victory. Mohney's Kawasaki suffered mud ingestion and was done for the day, but mota two was called on account of massive moisture anyway, so Mother Nature prevailed. Results 50 (4-6): 1. Pellett Photo by Mike Lewis SUGAR GROVE, 011, NOV. 2-3 Coming off a recent crown.ing as the Schoolboy and 125cc B Champion at -the Top-Gun showdown in Muddy Creek, Tennessee, Jeff Gibson came home to show the other locals a th iog or two at the Central Ohjo Competition Riders' Club motOcross course. Forty-degree temperatures and a bri k wind did little to slow the Team Green rider Gibson, as he whisked his way through all four motes of Saturday's 125cc B and Schoolboy classes and_ then easily dontinated Sunday's Schoolboy contest. After many successful years of National mjnicycle competition, the highly anticipated move up to the big bikes was a natural progression for the Hkable lad, as he had recently outgrown his KXSO, and - as most would have predicted - Gibson adapted easily t.o the 125s. The COCR club members had their famous course in fine condition, and as the initial 125cc B moto thundered away. it was the bright green F&S-sponsored KXl25 of Gibson out front as the pack blasted its way around the loamy tight lefthander of a first-tum. Pat Thrall attempted to squeeze inside on corner two, but Gibson would have none of it as he ·shook off Thrall's brazen attempt. and as the duo reached the six-jump section known as the "Dirty Half Dozen," Gibson acquired a small advantage. Ultimately, Gibson stretched out that lead 10 the checkers, wHh Michael Campbell squrnning in for second and Anthony Atwood in third. Moto two saw a quick start by Thrall, arid Gibson had to reach down for his many years of passing experience to dispatch the speedy rival. Through the double-jump tum section, Gibson went inside-outside to stear the point from Thrall to take the lead, and eventually run off with it. Thrall held on for second, Atwood was third and Campbell fourth. Results 125 B: 1. Jeff Gib50n (Kaw); 2. Patrick Thrall (Hon); 3. Anthl; ny Atwood ($uz); 4, Michael Campbell (Kaw); 5. Wey cool at Morelands MX By Ray Woods 5TANTON, MI, NOV. 3 The final 1996 motocross event at Morelands MX was a whopping success, with many hard-core riders and their families enjoying a weekend's worth of fun and Team Green's Nick Wey enjoying his 125cc A overall win. The 125cc A action was fast and furious with a dozen of Michjgan's fastest riders. Ryan Valade grabbed the holeshot. On lap two it was clear that Kelly Sntith wasn't about to settle for second as he launched !?y Valade on the 110-foot double and took the inside Hne. F&5-backed Tom Barron pressured Valade into a smaIl mistake, taking over second. Wey, who had gated poorly, was on the move. Within three laps, Wey was pressuring Barron for second. For the next two laps, Weyand Barron battled handlebar to handlebar. At the bottom of a downh.ill section, Wey forced his way to the inside benn and shut Barron down. With just two laps to go, Smith enjoyed an eight-second lead. Wey pulled out aU the stops and closed to within one second of Smith at the flag. Barron finished third and Valade was fourth, with Chad DeHoop rounding out the top five. The start of the second 12Scc A moto belonged to Smith, but he soon found himself on the ground after he drove into a large sand sweeper a little too hard. This momentarily blocked Valade, Barron and DeHoop, but Wey got around cleanly and opened up a 10-second lead by the second lap. Smith remounted in fifth, wasted little time picking off DeHoop and set his sights on Valade and Barron, who were ntnning second and third respectively. By the fifth lap Sntith had closed to within one second of Barron, who had been pressing Valade hard for the last two laps. Sntith made an aggressive move on Barron on the double down to take over third. On the last lap Smith overshot a berm and went through the banners, ending up a distant seventh. Wey took the overall with Barron dainting second, Valade third and Sntith fourth. DeHoop rounded out the top five.
