Cunningham and Saunders all came in
dropping two, as did the remaining
AAs. Scott Miller had a tew problems
with slower riders and dropped three.
. Up to the gas, Ramey had a twopoint lead over Veator, Nichols and the
remaining AAs. From the gas to the
57.8-mile mark, the club set the speed at
24, but after that it was set at 18 mph.
'Check number seven at the 60.8-mile
mark was a going-in check on the far
side of a clear-cut section.
Nine miles of fairly fast trail, c1earcut sections and jeep roads posed no
problem for Ramey and the top riders,
although many of them were seen doing
quite a balancing act as they came into
check number eight. A few miles past
the check was another reset and speed
change back to 20 mph.
At 77.7 miles there was a going-in
check with th.e club running riders back
through some of the tight trail used in
the first section. The trail was only five
miles long, but Ramey managed to double his points loss by dropping two.
Veator and Nichols were the only
other riders to come through the section
with a two-point loss. Steven Smith,
Michael Grizzle and the other AA and A
riders made the section losing three.
At mile 83, racers encountered another reset and speed change, back to 24
mph. At 90.5 miles, the riders were
checked going into the last five miles of
the race. Ramey and Veator blasted
through with the fast times, losing only
one minute each.
The trails in this section were tight,
rocky and some of them were like goat
trails, with no margin for error. The
norm in this section 'seemed to be a twoor three-point loss. In these tight sections, passing could be an impossible
feat.
"I didn't have any trouble all day
passing," Ramey said. "The riders ahead
of me were great; they moved over as
soon as they heard me. Some of them
would just dive off the trail."
Ramey finished the day with four
points, followed by Veator's six and
Nichols' seven. Jeff Harris dropped
eight for fourth overaU.
Former National Enduro Champion
Terry Cunningham wasn't able to match
Veator's pace, taking fifth overall and
second in the 200cc A class. Saunders
pulled out the stops and tooK first in the
250cc A class.
Team Green rider Johnny McCoy lost
out to Saunders on the tie breaker for
second. Eric Armour took overall B honors with a score of 12, while Charles
Han was the top C rider with -a score of
16.
