Young prevails at CRC GP
By Greg Robertson
PALMDALE, CA. OCT. 20
Michael Young emerged victorious in the BOcc
(14-16) das after nearly 45 minutes of battling
with Christopher Gosselaar on the sands of the
Los Angeles County Raceway during the opening round of the ninth annual Sponsorship
Series.
Gosselaar set the pace on the opening lap of
the Gremlln Grand Prix after being quickest off
the line from the dead-engine start. Young was
running a close second followed by Brent
Gilliam, John Grover and Jesse Beard. Young
passed Gosselaar for the first lime as they came
off the Saddle Glen course and entered the J.B.
Memorial on lap one.
Half a lap later, Gosselaar was back out front
with Young pushing him in every corner.
Leader of the 80cc (12-13) dass Shane Smith
closed to Young's back fender to make it an
exciting three-rider battle for the overall lead.
For the next 30 minutes, these three riders
were all over each other, with lead changes happening every lap as they danced their way
through lapped traffic. With just a couple of laps
remaining in the race, Gosselaar went down in a
sweeping turn and pretty much handed Young
the dass win. .
Young made one final pass on the younger
Bess to secure the overall win with the white
flag in sight. Gosselaar took second in the 14- to
16-year-old class, well ahead of John Simanovich
and Gilliam. Donnie Durrer got around Miles
Buck early in the race to finish second 10 Bess in
the 12- to 1:;'year-old field.
Scoll Howe had trouble off the start, but
came back from dead last to win the BOec (7-11)
dass. Shane Smith finished second with Anth<>ny Barbacovi holding off Caleb Gosselaar and
Jared rebo for third.

Ken Greene's DfCW was the winning machine at
an AHRM.A regional vintage motocross race
that drew more than 145 entires to the worldfamous Carlsbad GP track.
Schedullng a vintage motocross in the shadow of the annual Del Mar Mile flat track race
was a dicey proposition, as such an event could
have siphoned off spectators and participants
alike. Promoter John LeFevre, however, came
through with an event that won't soon be forgotten by combining the AHRMA racing with the
CZ world championships, and including
Bomber support races.
Race one, featuring 500cc Sportsman Intermediates, started the show with a three-way dice.
CZ-mounted Louis Harker began chasing the big
Maico of Eric Cooke as well as Keith Petrangelo's
beautiful BSA. Throughout moto one, the lead
changed more then Dennis Rodman's hair color,
with Petrangelo finally coming out ahead with
Cooke and Harker hot on his heels.
Moto two had the same three riding Ilke they
were hooked together. All bets were off as the
trio continually swapped positions. On lap four,
Petrangelo's BSA, pulUng Ilke a tractor up CarI&bad's long uphill, came alongside Cooke and
Harker. Cresting the hill, Cooke's Maico stalled,
allowing the BSA to squeeze into second place.
Harker, hearing the big four-stroke rumble
behind him, turned up the boost just enough to
take the checkers first, with Petrangelo and
Cooke in hot pursuit.
Classic 125cc action was no less exciting as
15 racers Uned up on an incredible variety of
rare machines. Establishing superiority immediately were Mark Arsenault, on a Husqvarna that
was too clean to race, and Greene. These two
experts wasted little time outdistancing the rest
of the field, at limes looking Ilke dance partners
as they mirrored each other's e""ry move. The
first-molo game of follow the leader finally carne
10 an end with Arsenault holding off the hardcharging Greene for the first-moto win.
When the gate dropped for moto two, th.e
dance began again as the pair burst out of the
gate with an awesome holeshot, leaving the
pack far behind. l.ap after lap, Greene chased
Arsenault, finally selling him up for a beautiful
pass on the final lap. Running out of time, Arsenault tried to retake the brazing DKW, only to
fall as he pulled alongsidel handing Greene a
well-fought victory and the overall win.

Dieter captures Hunt MX wins
By Michael Harasmlsz
HUNT, NY, OCT. 20
Aaron Dieter took the overall wins in the 125cc
Amateur and the l2Sec Schoolboy classes with a
dominating four-mota sweep at Hunt Moto
ParkHeavy rains on the days leading up to the
race kept the rider turnout low, but the racing
was still intense and overall finishes and season
points were important as the WNYSC season is
coming 10 an end. The muddy track made Une
selection and bike preparation the keys to a top
finish.
Dieter's answer to staying dean in. the mud
was simple - just get out front early and stay on
two wheels.
rn 125cc Amateur action, Dieter took the
first-moto win with Josh Miller following him in
second place and Bobo Neiss in third.
The second moto was another Dieter runaway with the win and the overall. Neiss turned
the tables on Miller with a second-place finish
for second overall. Miller was third, which was
good for third overall.
When the l2Sec Schoolboy cJass rolled to the
Une, the track had become even more challenging as this was one of the last races of the day.
Dieter again used his game plan and got out
early in both motos for the wins and the overall.
Aaron Shepherd used a similar formula as
he was second in both motos for second overall
Third overall was Jimmy Miller.
The muddy conditions were not the best for
the sixth annual Vintage Exhibition. race, but 18
riders Uned up 10 put on a show with bikes that ..included AJS Stormers, CZs, E1sinores, Yamaha
MXs and a Penton.
Multi-dass winner orm Smith on his 74
Yamaha grabbed the early lead with Joe Ellington on an RM370 dose behind. ErUngton took
avantage of the big bike's power to move into
the lead on the first lap.
Elilngton and Smith pulled away from Dave
Carmen on his '73 Elsinore as they battled for
the lead. Ellington took the win while Smith was
second.

Robinson roosts at
Sunday Creek Motocross
By Rupert F, Pellett
Mll.LVll.LE, OH, OCT. 20
Richard Robinson won both motos of the Over
30 class at Sunday Creek and followed it up with
a second overall in the Over 25 division during
one of District 11's last races of the season.
The Russell Ranch received a hearty turnout
of racers despite the weather. Fog, wind, and an
occasional misty rain gree.ted the enthusiastic
crowd of BuCkeye riders, and the track was in its
