hosted round one of the six-round Sand Master Series n, and Troy Decker came out on top of the Vet Junior class. The sandy, well-watered, Al McElroydesigned track held up to the onslaught of the day's 34 motos. A special rebate of $20 to firsttime racers brought 24 new riders to try their motocross skills. After taking a few years off, Decker came back and grabbed the holeshot in Vet Junior mota .one and steadily stretched his lead, leaving Eric McElroy to hound Andy Moore for second place. Mike Halvor on raced in fourth, while further back in the pack, Donald Hudgins passed Harry Trainor on the first lap. Trainor stayed close and took his position back as Hudgins faded during the moto. In the last half of moto one, McElroy continued to pressure Monroe, who pulled a small lead in the front half of the track where there were more jumps. McElroy applied heavy pressure in the tighter, twistier sections. On the last lap, Monroe went wide and shut off two jumps before the finish flag. McElroy saw the opening and cut inside, taking Monroe's line away at the berm, and secured the secondplace finish. Decker pulled the holeshot in mota two, with McElroy rounding the first tum in second. Monroe dogged Clay Cole, and on lap two made a clean pass on the Mount McElroy jump. Trainor pu t the move on Hudgi ns to take over fifth place. Hudgins continued to fade and was passed by Halvorson on the last lap. Trainor gained on Monroe and Cole, but needed at least one more lap. OCT. 13 Brian Renshaw took the win in the Vet Intermediate class at the second annual Chaparral Cycle Grand Prix at Glen Helen Raceway. Renshaw earned the win with consistency and patience, something needed to negotiate six miles of motocross, natural washes and asphalt for 90 minutes. The early lead belonged to Dennis Gallagher, followed by Jerry. Black, Renshaw, Steve Dalton, Ken Tapert and Ron Clement. Gallagher jumped out to a 12-second lead on Black on the second lap. The battle for third was another six seconds behind, with Renshaw, Dalton and Clement, all tiding for Privateer Sportswear, all within 10 bike lengths of each other. By the fourth lap, Clement had moved up to third. Just as. the group had. dropped into the infield, Clement looked over his shoulder and went off the lIack. That detour put Renshaw and Dalton ahead of him. On the next lap, Clement was again in front of Renshaw and Dalton. Black had left the race. Clement and Renshaw were beginning to put a small dent into Gallagher's lead. Clement and Renshaw pitted for fuel at the same time, while Gallagher elected to go another lap. Joe Bagnasco had taken over fourth. Gallagher's crew was amazed that their rider would keep going by them, even when he was signa.led to pit. Gallagher saw that Clement and Renshaw were catching up, so he gambled that his larger tank would have enough fuel to finish. The next time they ·came into view, Gallagher was still leading. but only by about five seconds as they approached the white flag. Renshaw was now second. "[ fell in the asphalt portion of the course:' Clement said of his move to third. When the riders reappeared on the motocross portion, Ren~ shaw was in front. "I got (Gallagher) coming down that last hill before you start back towards the motocross track," Renshaw said. "He gave a little throttle coming down, and [ left the my motor pinned, down the inside, locked up the brakes and caught him off." The checkered came out with Renshaw first, followed by Gallagher, Clement, Bagnasco and Tapert. Results VET BX: 1. John Braasch (Kaw); 2. Rick O'Donnell (Hon); 3. Ourke Coleman (Hon): 4. Hundreds of people watched Bowyer take the lead from the start of the.12Scc Pro first malO, with Jeff Hedden, Marc Gifford, c.J. Regier, Dennis Burnett and Rodney North in tow. Bowyer and Hedd.en broke away with Bowyer just in front of Hedden until lap two, when Hedden made a move on the inside of Bowyer and fell in a downhill turn. Bowyer finished the first mota with a win, and Hedden held off Gifford for second. In the second moto, Bowyer led from start to finish, but Hedden ran with him all the way. Bowyer ran a perfect race to take the overall. Gifford held on to third with Regier fourth and Burnell fifth. The first 2SOcc Pro race was between Bowyer and Hedden, with Hedden crashing twice and having to hold off Gifford for second place. The second mota was close, but Bowyer led all the way. Gifford and Kevin Dunham battled for third, with Dunham taking the spot for third overall. Stev.e Hershell was fifth. The Over 30 class has been one of the best all year and they turned it up for the Fall Championships. Ken Voss led the first moto with R.mdy Smith, John Voss and Steve Schale close behind.
