(770) 934-7850. FAX (770) 934-3112 A young fan I just returned home from a wonderful Sunday afternoon at the San Jose Mile, and feel a need to share an incident I witnessed after the races were over. I went down to the pits to get a closeup look and possibly a handshake from some of the riders. I was talking to one of them when a young family with a small boy, probably a grade-schooler, came up and asked if they could have a group picture taken with the racer. The racer excused rumself and, grinning from ear to ear, got up to go and join the photo group. A~ the young fan was staring wide-eyed at the Harley race bike, the racer picked up the boy and sat him on the seat and told him to "grab hold of the handlebars." That young fan will no doubt forever remember ills day at the San Jose Mile where he got special attention. Mom and Dad will cherish the photos for years to come and this old fan wiJI smile knowingly when people say that Jay Springsteen is sure a credit to the sport .()f motorcycling. RobertKimm Phoenix, AZ Del Mar Mile kudos My hat is off to the Del Mar Mile. Both Chris Agajanian of Chris Agajanian Presents and Bob Bishop of the San Diego Antique Motorcycle Club did an outstanding job again tills year of putting on the best show and race of the entire season. Record crowds, perfect weather and the largest gathering of Legends made it a memorable five-day bike week event. Keep up the great work, you've got lots of fans out here. Andrea Phillips San Uiego, CA Rooting for Miguel It's been a week or more since the last AMA Superbike round in Las Vegas, but I'm still thinking about it. Despite INSIDE. the recent reports of Miguel DuHamel's unfortunate miscues on and more importantly off the track, he seems to be a racer's racer. He gives all of his abilities come race day and respects the talents of his rivals. Well, almost. His recent comments regarding Mat Mladin and now Larry Pegram have overshadowed the more accommodating side of ills personality. This is an unfair memory to be left with when compared to the dedication he has shown. After finally getting by Pegram, it was still impressive to watch rum try to the point of lifting the wheel a bit high under braking. What more could you ask for - two gifted, dedicated gentlemen representing the top of the class. I'm glad it was Doug Chandler, but I was rooting for Miguel. Mike Panelo Santa Clara, CA No vote, no voice Tuesday, November 5, is the day for every motorcyclist and ATV rider to make their voices heard. Every road, off-road, dual sport rider, competitive, trail and commuter rider should be at the polls to vote. • Whether you base your vote on a candidate's position on motorcycling concerns or other issues that affect your family, lifestyle or financial well-being, go to the polls and vote. Many local, state and federal offices may be won with fewer than a hundred votes. Your vote can make the difference. To Cycle News, thanks for all the public service announcements regarding voter registration and voting over the last couple of months. Vote on Tuesday, November 5! Make your voice be heard. Dana Bell AMA Western States Representative Long Beach, CA E~ig says so long I am writing this letter to express my appreciation to Bevo Forte and Scott USA for more than 15 years of loyal support. I remember the first time I wore an old pair of Scott goggles I had found and how I had some good luck at that race. After that, whenever I was really down, Bevo would show up at a race with a pair of red goggles for me to wear. It picked me up and gave me the boost I needed to get going again. Bevo gave me moral support when·I needed it most and probably deserved it least. His enthusiasm is contagious around the race track and aU of us racers pick up on it. The result is a better event for all the fans and a better product for the promoters and the AMA I would also like to express my gratitude to the great people at Thor who have sponsored me for the past 10 years. Tills year at Steel City, the most important race of my career so far, Jim Gallagher (who started at Thor when I did) came up with the coolest Led Zeppelin gear I have ever seen. I will miss him, Mark, Drew and the rest of the gang at Thor. I have enjoyed my association with them and the people in their parent company, Parts Unlimited. • The time has come for me to leave these relationsillps just as it came for me to leave Yamaha. I wish them all lots of fun and happiness. See you at the races.
