EVENTS Liam Murphy was the top Micro rider at the Stars of Tomorrow Youth championships in Delta, Ohio. mph, with some unforgiving obstacles and much more technical terrain. For the first time ,in several years riders were sent through Devi]'s Hole and up the White Mountain trail. A rocky, talcum powder uphill was the site of a gnarly bottleneck and didn't leave many riders wondering how the trail got its name. Participants once again were sent through Deep Creek, but it was not during a special te t so the notorious crossing didn't present its usual problems. Mattson captured the overall and first 250cc A with a final tally of 11.0608 on his FMFbacked CR 2S0. Training Wheels Motorcycle Oub member Rick Daniel rode his IMS Yamaha to the Vet 250cc A win and second overall with 13.0618. Third overall and second Vet 250cc A went to UEA's Jim McGrath with 13.0717 on his SCC-sponsored KTM. The Viewfinder's Casey Longman took fourth overall and first Open A with 13.07<1 on his XR 600. DELTA, OR, OCT. 6 Delta Raceway closed its 1996 MX racing season. with a bang by hosting its annual Stars of TOl)1orrow Youth Championship, at which Bran- don Butzin took top 60cc (7-11) honors. Butzin rode a nearly flawless race to win by a huge margin. Alan Butzin took runner-up honors, holding off Kyle Rothgeb and Carl &hlacht. Rothgeb grabbed the BOcc Beginner holeshot to take the lead during moto one. Ron Bowers battled past Alan Butzin to close the gap on Rothgeb and take the moto win. Bowers fought off Rothgeb in moto two as the two were neck and neck most of the race. Bowers finished ahead of Rothgeb with Butzin taking third overall. The Micros provided some great excitement as a bumper crop of 50s was on hand with Liam Murphy leading the way for the second year in a row, claiming the 7- .to 8-year-old class and the Super division, with Adam Behringer and David Bacon also putting in strong rides. Damon Bauer motored to a hard-fought win over Cameron Martinez in the 4- to 6-year-old class as Martinez took advantage of an early spill by Bauer in moto one to claim the win. Martinez took the lead in moto two with Bauer hounding his rear fender. Bauer made a good inside pass through the back sweeper to take the lead and overall win. Results 50 (4-(j): 1. Daniel Dermyer Mattson reaches top at Bad Mountain Enduro By Flon Pocher LAKE ARROWHEAD, CA. SEPT. 22 Erik Mattson knifed his way through the woods the quicke.st to claim the overall win at the fourth annual Bad Mountain Enduro. Mattson tallied a two-minute margin of victory at the 81-mile District 37 event held in the Lake Arrowhead/Big Bear area. The Checkpoint Enduro Motorcycle Oub put on a challenging event with the only rider complaints being the ever-present dust and two sections of dirt road that had participants traveling in opposite directions. No serious injuries occurred due to the two-way traffic, but the day didn't pass without incident. On the other hand, the host club did do an excellent job of allowing riders to get back on time between special tests. Both loops began at the Pinnacles staging area. The 37-mile first loop had an average speed of 23 mph, which was a fairly rapid pace considering that the majority of the specia.1 tests were routed through tight, twisting trails in dense woods. The first special was the exception, with a 48 mph average through the rolling' hills just above Lake Silverwood. The second loop also had a quick pace, 24 WMN A: 1. Anna Cody (Yllrn); 2. List claims cup at Worldsports MX By Kyle Myers OCALA, Fl., OCT. 6 Just under 300 riders competed in round three of the Worldsports Gold Cup Series held at Florida Motosports Co.mplex, where Suzuki-mounted Bryan List cashed in on the Suzuki Contingency by winning the 250cc B division. In the first 250cc B moto, List jumped out to the early lead with Mike Lampe, Scott Lamb, Forrest Butler and Bryan Griffin following. Lamb moved by Lampe on the opening circuit as the top three riders pulled away from the pack. Karston Butler passed Griffin on lap two, as Lamb pressured List for the point position. With two laps to go, Lamb sailed by List on a jump to .take over the lead. Lamb held on for the moto win over List, Lampe, Forrest and Karsten Butler. List again found himself out front to start moto two with Lamb, Lampe, Brett Bohannon and J.D. Holmes giving chase. Forrest Butler was on the move after a mldpack start and passed Holmes and Bohannon on the first lap. Meanwhile, up front, Lamb was all over List trying to find a way by. Lamb hounded List for five laps and finally made his molle at the same place on the track that he had in the first race. With the white nag out, it looked to be Lamb aU the way until he experienced bike problems and List slipped by for the moto and overall win. Lamb limped home in second as Lampe, Butler and Griffin rounded out the top five places. In other racing action, Anthony Pocorobba was unstoppable in the 125cc A and 250cc A divisions. Pocorobba won all four motos, over HSKS teammate Jarrett Tipping. Pocorobba's only loss of the day came in the Pro class, where Jason Thomas posted a 1-1 tally to collect the lion's share of the Pro purse. Bowman blasts Delta MX By Carl Davis DELTA, OR, OCT. 5 Dave Bowman blasted to mutiple Vet-class wins at Delta Raceway's MRA race as the crafty veteran took control of the Over 35 and Over 40 divisions. Bowman, owner of Tech Care Suspension services, had his modified RM Suzuki hammering hard all day. Bowman motored. away from everyone in the Over 35 class as he easily outdistanced the field, leaving Eric Bauer and Jeff Weber in a battle for second with Bauer picking up second overall. KTM-mounted Barry Mayo was the only rider to keep Bowman in sight in the Over 40 c1ass as the recent graduation of Bowman into the old-guy class promises a rivalry in the making. Mayo took the lead briefly in moto two when Bowman lost control over the stairstep double, but saved it and came back to repass Mayo for the win. Other top riders of the day were Ian Hammond in the 125cc Junior and 125cc lntermediate classes, while Canadian Brad Dixon ran his new Kawasaki to the 16- to 24-year-old and 2S0cc Intermediate Vtjns.
