As for Dewit, he, like his Suzuki teammate Bervoets, ended his race in the pits, some laps down on the lead riders. To put Chambon's win into perspective, he led home second-place Williams by nine seconds, while the rider nine seconds behind Pidoux in the 'first semi was back in eighth place. Between the semifinals and final came a popular event called the Course a la America. Yep, the good old American theme always is a good way to get the crowd going in Europe. This event . enlisted the top rider from each country, plus several Belgians, to battle over 10 laps with the last rider on each lap being excluded. First went Nicoll, followed by Jobe, Bervoets and so on until it was only Stephane Chambon standing talI at the end - and the pro-Belgium crowd giving him the thumbs down for his troubles. As if angered by the show of disre, spect from the crbwd, Chambon then really got dialed in for the main event and boy, did the crowd change once the master produced his best. The riders lined up with the front row of the field including Chambon, Pidoux, Williams, Ott and Godfroid, while Nicoll and Martens kept the motocross flag fly- , ing with second-row starts. Further back were Smets in 17th, Jobe 22nd and Boonen 24th. As for Bervoets, his offered chance of a final spot was soon declined and he sat out the final in the comfort of his pit enclosure. As if Stephane Chambonneeded any favorable starting position. With his usual triple doughnuts on the start straight (to warm his tires), all was set for the start. The defending Mettet champion flew out of the start so fast that by lap one his lead was three seconds. Jobe was back in the pits with Bervoets and not looking too worried that his chances to battIe the Mettet course were over. "It's not that I came here to lay down," Jobe said, "but the bike is not working. We tried to fix it and nothing changed, so it was over for me." By lap three, Chambon was five seconds ahead of Pidoux, who was getting some serious hurry-up from Boris Chambon and Godfroid, while Martens led Nicoll and Smets, the three MXers in 11th, 13th and 14th. With his head tucked under the handlebars going down the long straight, Chambon locked his machine into the tar turn one like Chris Carr did on his Harley. It was pure madness, yet Chambon did it with such ease. Chambon crossed the line miles ahead of brother Boris, with Williams turning in a factory Husky triple treat in third ahead of Pidoux and Wagrier in fifth place. Martens finished ninth with Nicoll 10th and Smets 12th. "It was fun, clicking the back wheel out on the tunis and showing what we can do," he said. "I will come back here, of course, but I hope next time Stefan' Everts can ride. It is maybe better for the crowd and also for me. I need the challenge." And then the Superbiker winner made his way to the crowd, which had only an hour earlier given him the thumbs down, but was now cheering his victory as though he were Everts himself. 0\' Supermotard Mettet Cup Mettet, Belgium Resuhs:October13.1996 O/A: 1.
