Luca rocks at Rock Island Enduro By Kern Burden DRUMMOND ISLAND, ML SEPT. 28 Scott Luca found the fast line through rocks, mud bogs and cedar swamps to claim the overall at the Rock Island Enduro. Rival Alen Randt was the promoter and pathfinder for this sixth round of the AMA District 14 Enduro Series, and Luca took advantage of Randt"s absence from the action to nail down the win. The course began with a special test that ran around and through a quarry that served as the staging area. The first checkpoint was right after this section, and already many riders knew they were in trouble. Autumn rains had hit the area earlier in the week, leaving what would have been a fun trail submerged. Those who emerged from the slop back onto the road knew what would be in store for them. Racers would get a lesson in the three Rs - rocks, roots and ruts.. Factor in intermittent rain showers.. and conditions became brutal. Generous resets and an 18 mph average allowed mast racers to make it to the gas stop on time. With the promise of more of the same in the second loop, several B and C riders dropped out. Those who soldiered on were faced with 24 mph average ·and more water than they had seen since the Mother's Day Enduros of the 19705. The fun factor dropped off dramatically. At the last reset, Senior A rider Bob Nichols said, ~Tll remind you to never come here again if you'll remind me to never, ever come here again:' This pretty much summed up everyone's mood. A welcome cruise down a paved road brought the survivors back to the fina) section. A known control checkpoint started everyone back into the special test section on time for a sprint to the finish. Luca nailed down the win, wi th Hare Scrambles ace Blair Bersano just one point back. Dave Lipovsky garnered third, two points behind the winner. Results GRND CHMP: Scott Luca (KTM).
