SETRA Enduro Series, Round 6 Ramey has fun at Cochran By Kenneth King Photo by Elalna Reynolds COCHRAN, GA, ocr. 13 anklin Ramey wanted to prove that he was a force to be reckoned with at the 21st Cochran Fun Run after a disappointing finish at round five of the SETRA Enduro Series, and he succeeded by taking the overall win with only a four-point loss over roughly 240 riders and a strong AA class, The AA class had eight of the SETRA regulars. Champion Allen Gravitt was still recovering &om ankle surgery and.. unable to race, although he did work a checkpoint. Gravitt vows to be back in time for the Maplesville Enduro on November 3, Frank Amos, Bud Hardeman and Charles Smith put on an enduro with sections easy enough for beginners but with trails still challenging to the fast guys - hence the name "Fun Run." Rain fell in central Georgia in the early. part of the week before the race, making the ground nice and tacky with just a little dust showing up on the dirt roads for the later-row riders, Temperatures were in the mid-70s on race day along with blue skies and not a cloud in sight. The first half of the race consisted of f Franklin Ramey took his second overall win In the SETRA Enduro Series at round six in Cochran, Georgia. sections of two-track connected by short, tighter trails and areas of clearcut. The course was relatively easy up to the gas stop, giving the riders a chance to warm up on some great trails. Most everyone was able to maintain a 24-mph average on the first three sec· tions, and riders had to watch the clock to avoid being early. Team Green's Steven Smith got caught a little off guard and burned check three by one minute, but he didn't let that shake him. Smith was the only AA rider to zero the next section, all the others dropping one point each. Checks five and six were all made on time by the AA riders. At the gas, everyone was tied with one point apiece, except for Smith who had the two-point loss for being early. Then the riders rode a few miles of fire road into an eight-mile section of rooty, tight woods with several creek crossings. After a reset came the last woods section, about 10 miles long and fairly tight, proving to be the major points-taking section of the day. Check number seven, a going-in check located on a fire road, caugh..t Jason Chancey by surprise and he burned it by a minute. The section fol· lowing the check was nice and tight with several technical areas, and the AAs dropped three points each. The scores were all very close at this point, and it seemed the top positions would be determined by seconds, Ramey really got on the gas in the last, tight and twisty section of trail and lost only two points. Smith dropped three as did Scott Miller, AshIey Brewer, Michael Grizzle and Jeff Harris. Mike Martin dropped four and Chancey came through with five. This was the closest race to date, with Ramey taking the overall by just one point fewer than the next three riders. Scott Miller on a new KTM had his best ride to date, finishing in the runner-up position for second overall with seven points. Doug Masencoup put in an excellent ride to finish first in a close 250cc A battle with Johnny McCoy, who finished second. Cochran Fun Run Cochran, Georgia Results: October 13, 1996 01k F,ank Ramey m.
