EVENTS Dustin Jameson (5x) leads Trent Bragg .(56) on his way to double moto wins at Glen Helen Raceway In San Bernardino, California. Jameson jams at Glen Helen MX By Robert Van Damme SAN BERNARDINO, CA, SEPT. 22 Dustin Jameson gave notice to the 125cc Novice class that he means business as he won going away in both motos at the California State Qualifier at Glen Heren Raceway. This was the third and final chance for riders in the state to qualify for the State Championships to be held on October 19 and 20, also at Glen Helen. The first moto got under way with Jameson out in front as the riders came into the spectator area. Second belonged to Josh Cavanaugh, followed by Kevin Townsend, Josh Wray, Travis Frink and Brian Morgan. Frink went down before the end of the first lap and fell out of contention, as did Morgan, moving Jose PolaseK into fifth. 11,e end of the first lap had Jameson. up by five seconds over Cavanaugh. Wray was the next to feel the pressure from behind as Polasek and Kenny Morris were able to get around by forcing Wray to make mistakes and bobble i,n the com, ers. Coming back into view, Townsend took over Second place from Cavanaugh by the end of the second lap. Morris was able to get around Polasek by the fourth lap. Jameson took the win followed by Townsend, Cavanaugh, Morris and Polasek. The second-moto start was almost a mirror image of the first as Jameson once again pulled th.e holesho.t, but this time it was Trent Bragg, RIchard Wickham and Townsend following. WIckham got by Bragg as the riders came toward the finish line, while at the same time, Wray got tangled up with another rider and got his handlebars stuck in the opponent's swingarm. Bragg passed Wickham by the end of the first lap, but not before Townsend moved past both of them, taking over second. Wickham tired toward the end of the race, letting Justin Gutierrez move into the top five. Bragg, un.der pressure from Polasek, ran into trouble and did not see the checkered flag. john Burr Cycle-sponsored jameson took·the win, followed by Townsend, Polasek, Gutierrez and Wickham. CUlpepper wins Village Creek CC By Darryl Smith FORT WORTH, TX, SEPT. 22 The Cordray family hosted round 13 of the Texas Cross Country series after r:noving the event from the previously scheduled location of Durant, Oklahoma, and David Culpepper retained h.is series points lead by winning the AA class at the new Village Creek Motocross track. Rainy weather throughout the week left near-perfect conditions for Sunday 9 a.m. event. CUlpepper used a quick start to pull an early lead on his Suzuki RMX 250 while Ricky Lambert, David Garner, Eric Hell and Darryl Smith rounded out the top five. Smith outjumped Hess a.fter a short stint on the MX track before heading into the woods. Culpepper slowly moved away from the field as a pack of riders lumbered behind Garner. Bobby Southard had closed in, and Tom Robinson and Scott Foster also were in tow after nearly knocking each other over in the first tum. Smith passed Gar.ner on ~ long, rough straight after the chec, kpoint to move into third. Hess squeezed his Husky 610 by Garner in the open fields, and Southard also got Garner before lap one was over. Lambert washed. out afteI:, a short uphiU on lap two, Telegating him from second all the way to eighth. Robinson put in everything he had to move from seventh to second on lap two. By the time Robinson got to second, though, CUlpepper was out of sight, and he never closed, finishing a minute behind Culpepper. Smith led the freight train ahead of Hess, Southard and Foster before falling off the pace at the midway point, At that time, Southard pulled away from the pack to ride alone the last half of the race. in third. The 42-year-old Frank Shacklee was on the gas all day and overtook Hess on the sixth lap to earn his best finish in the AA Expert class with a fourth. Hess rounded out the top f.ive aminute behind Shacklee. Results: AA 25040: 1. David Culpepper (Suz); 2. Tom Robin~ (Suz.); 3. Bobby Southard (KTM); 4. Frank Shacklee (Yam); 5. Eric Hess (Hon).
