SEPT. 22 Daniel Taft celebrated his 10th birthday with a win in the 80cc (7-11) division during round one of the Starwest night contingency series held at Starwest Cycle Park in Moreno Valley. Taft m.ade it very clear that he intended to win tonight by pulling holeshots at the start of both combined Minicycle events The first moto was a slam dunk for Taft after he simply left the competition b, the dust with a romp of the field. The second mote saw Taft again out front, but this time track officials threw Taft a curve by adding two laps to the race. Taft battled to mamtain the lead on the final lap after a last-ditch charge by David Sullins. Danny Carlson continued his dominance by winning both 125cc intermediate motos. Carlson easily topped the field in the first combined mota by grabbing the holeshot, then pulling away to a 3O-second margin at the finish. The second moto was more complex for Carlson, who first got stuck in the starting gate, then crashed in turn two when a less-experienced tider swaP.l"'d out and fell in his path. Carlson remounted, !hen charged past nearly 30 riders in eight laps to once agam score the moto and overall victory. Chad Gores was the prince of Pee Wees tonight by scoring the victory in three separate classes. Gores topped the Modified and Super Pee Wee divisions on the Pee Wee track and the Super Pee Wee division on the main track. Results Little Track STRTR (4-6): 1. Thomas Carlson (KTM). STRTR (708): 1. BRAINERD, MN, SEPT, 14-15 Lucky bog Racing's Roger Hendricks, Brett Donahue, Tom Mason and Steve johnson bested a field. of 55 teams at the Central Roadracing Association's four-hour endurance event held a~ Brainerd International Raceway. Johnson was the first tider aboard the Hendricks-assembled Suzuki GSX-R 7S0/1100 and led the first four laps. However, he was surptised when Tony Brewe,'s 7S0 passed him to lead the fifth and sixth. "1 didn't have any time to practice on the bike, and I wasn't sure how fast it would be, or how fast I should be," Johnson said. "After I realized how close the other guys were, I picked up the pace, turned in some 1:46s and put some time on them." "Our team plan was to keep our noses clean, not stuff anybody and not get into tr,ouble in traffic," Donahue said. CRA / CCS veteran Mason was up next, and despite not having been on the track in two years, held his own in heavy traffic. "The first few laps were scary, but by the thid lap I found my rhythm and things were clicking for me," Mason said, "Roger put together such a nice package, it was easy to ride fast." Next up was Hendricks, who suffered the Hi Per Sports-sponsored team's only mechanical failure of the race. ' "1 was wheelying out of turn nine when I set the front end down and the tachometer feU off," Hendricks said. "I guess the tach must have loosened up, which aUowed it to fan down into the fairing. Then the motor started to cut out intermittently." As Johnson got back on the bike for the final leg of the race, Hendticks duct-taped the tachometer back in place. That didn't solve the engine problem, but the' cut-outs didn't stop johnson from lapping the second-place team. "We thought the number 258 bike was a half a lap ahead of us, so I chased them down," Johnson explained. "Turns out though, they were actually a half lap behind us." Results U/l55: I.
