Carmichael captures cup at Gatorback Motocross By Kyle Myers GAINESVILLE, FL, SEPT. 21 Ricky Carmichael posted a four-moto sweep to win the 125cc A and Pro divisons at the opening round of the Florida Gold Cup Series, held at Gatorback Cycle Park. Over 650 riders from 12 states and Canada competed on the Mark Barnett-designed course while competing for Suzuki and Yamaha contingences. In the fjrst Pro mota, Team Green's Carmichael led the field around tum one, with Anthony Pocorobba, jason Thomas, jarrett Tipping and Alan Andreu following. Andreu slipped by Tipping on the first lap, as Carmichael began to pull away. Carmichael added to his lead with each passing lap. Pocorobba and Tippi1'lg had a lock on second and third positions. Andreu and Tipping battled -for fourth the whole five laps. On the last lap, Tipping passed Andreu in the back sweeper to take the spot. Carmichael flew across the finish line to score the win over Pocorobba, Thomas, Tipping and Andreu. Carmichael found himself out front in the second moto with Tipping, Andreu, Pocorobba and Thomas giving chase. Pocorobba passed Andreu on the tabletop with Thomas and Travis Blackburn following a few turns later, moving Andreu back to sixth. Carmichael once again checked out from the field and entertained the crowd with aerial maneuvers. Pocorobba and Thomas pressured Tipping for the runner-up spot, with Pocorobba passing Tipping on the third circuit. Thomas then tried to go around Tipping and the two riders bumped, sending Thomas to the ground. This moved Blackburn and Andreu into fourth and fifth position. As the white flag came out, Carmichael enjoyed a good-size lead over Pocorobba, who was comfortable in front of the battle for third involving Tipping, Blackburn and Andreu. An.dreu slipped by Blackburn and Tipping in the sweeper to move into third as Blackburn passed Tipping just before the finish line. Carmichael later returned to compete in the 12Sec A class, where he led wire-ll>-wire in both ~motos over Pocorobba and Thomas. Results P/W ('"6): 1. Mike Nicolini (lEM): 2. TJ. Rhonelli (KTM): 3. Manniko manhandles Thorp Gulch Trials By Larry Toby LAKE GEORGE, CO, SEPT. 29 Mark Manniko piloted his Gas Gas to another win and perfect score in round seven of the Rocky Mountain Trails Association Championship Series held at the Tarryall State Recreational Area. Manniko completeet three loops of 14 sections with zero penalty points. It was the fourth 'time this season that Manniko has finished an RMT A event with a perfect score. Manniko must have developed a fondness for the number four. The previous weekend, he finished fourth at the last round of the National Championship series and finished fourth for the year in overall earnings. Manniko is riding the RMT A events this year as an exhibition rider, choosing not to accumulate series points to allow other riders to compete for the RMTA championship. The Expert class already is locked up by Matt Pisek, who has five first-place finishes after Manniko's scores are taken out of consideration. PIsek did not ride in round seven. Mike Young, brother of six-time national champion Ryan Young, piloted his Gas Gas to a second-place finish in the Expert class with a score of 46 points. Third went to Rob Weiher on a Gas Gas with 51 points. Trialsmaster Mike Tarter laid out two loops (one each for upper and lower classes) and allowed about four hours to ride the loop three times. The event was held on a beautiful fall day. Pine trees, fall-colored aspen trees and snowcovened Pike's Peak provided a'gorgeous backdrop, while the terrain provided plenty of natural challenges with large rocks and fallen logs. Results EX: 1. WL SEPT. 15 jay Parmeter topped the 750cc class but younger brother Rick earned the title King of the Hill on one of the toughest hills in the Midwest. It's big and it's rough. It's SOO feet of choppy, rock-strewn terrain. with natural steps all along and a formidable carved-out rock ledge at the 35O-foot mark to slow you down, if not stop you, just when you think you're going to top it. jay Parmeter studied the hi1l and then took his '96 KTM 550 over the choppy hiJI in 16.38 seconds for the win. fastest of the more than 40 attempts by some of the region's fastest75Occ. Rick Parmeter's success came at the end of the day, when he competed in the King of the Hill competition, where it's an honor just to qualify. The day's 10 fastest riders get one last chance at the hi1l, and Rick's smooth IS.19-second ride captured the royal title. jay almost caught his baby brother with a 15.54 for second place, and joel Faide's 16.61 was good enough for third. Setting the fastest time of the event was 21year-old Marc Stamm of Forreston, Illinois. Stamm had a truly amazing ride of only 14.94 seconds in the crowded SOOcc Novice class, and he set the time during the first round of competition when the hill was at its worst. Stamm easily won the class, the day's largest, and he was the only rider to oreak into the 14-second range. Two Nebraska riders didn't mind their long rides to and from the event. Gene Toplier was elated after winning the SOOcc Expert class at 16.36, while Kevin Tilson of Plattsmouth topped the hill on his Triumph in 20.85 seconds for the SOOcc Four-Stroke win. Another Triumph took the win in the Open class, where Spring Valley, Wisconsin's joel Falde piloted a 16.94-second ride. Mark Woods came close at 17.26 for the number-two spot. Lloyd Haas absolutely dominated the 750cc Expert class, which he won with an excellent IS.10-second ride. He was five seconds faster than runner-up' Dave Deaver, ~d he was the only rider in the class to top the hill on both tries. Results 500 NOV: 1. Marc Stamm (Hon); 2. Rick Parmeter (Hon); 3. Walters wails on MX By Mark Hopkins 5ALTLAKEOTY, lIT,AUG.31-SEPT.l The Pros took center stage at the Wild West ational season finale and put on a great show, with Spud Walters taking 250 and 12~c Pro overall wins on both days. Moto one of Saturday's 250cc Pro class saw Marlo Painter sandwiched between Californians Mike Healey and Spud Walters into tum one. The riders were still three abreast headed into tum two when Healey squirted into the lead with Walters edging out Painter for second. Healey and Walters reeled off lap after lap battling for the lead as Painter watched from third. Chad WaH work was nursing a Sick-sounding YZ250, trying to hold Onto fourth. At the checks, Walters was still glued behind Healey with Painter finishing a solo third. The second moto had Healey, Walters and Painter starting side by side again and Healey gassing it into first with Walters in tow. Both Painter and Wallwork were nursing sore bo(Ues suffered during 12Sec action, giving IGpp Posey a clean shot in to third. Up front, Healey gave into Walters' constant hounding, waving him by into the lead. Healey cruised for second, followed by Posey in third. The crowds lined the fences Sunday to watch Walters nab the holeshot in moto one of the 12Sec Pro class, followed by Mario Painter and 125cc Pro debut rider Danny Smith. Walters attempted to disappear from the rest of the pack but Smith displaced Painter and kept Walters in his sights all the way to the checkered flag. Painter held third until lap five when he slipped to fifth. jeremy Die! worked his way from a sixth-place start up to third by moto's end. Moto two was a cakewalk for Walters after he passed early leader Painter. Painter hung tough in second until the next-to-Iast lap when Smith, after a fifth-place start, finally inched his way into second. Painter wisely kept his pace in third to avoid the fourth-place battle raging between Diel and Robb Floth. At the checks, Walters won both the moto and the overall going 1- 1. Smith was second overall with 2-2 motos, with Diel nailing third, going 3-4. Results .........y 60 A: J. Boyd Foster. 2. Chase ~ 3. Sam Harper. 60 B: I. Beni Williams; 2. Tyson Hernandez; 3.
