Hoenshell takes 10th at Fort Hood Cross Country By Darryl Smith FORT HOOD, TX, SEPT. 8 Day Hoenshell continued his dominance of the Texas Cross Country Racing Series, taking home his 10th consecutive victory. HonesheU's only loss this season was in the opener, where he flatted out early in the race. Today he had another flat tire, but it came late info the race, and he held on to record the win. As the Pro class blasted off the line, Donnie McMillon took the holeshot. McMillon led the way for three laps with Hoenshell 20-30 yards behind at aU times. Hoen hell had a big scare at the midpoint of the race when McMillon's dust clouds hid a tree stump. Hoenshell narrowly escaped an endo, just clipping it with his front tire. DFW KTM-backed Hoenshell passed McMillon on th.e fourth lap, and opened up a slight lead only to discover he had a rear flat. For a lap and a half, Hoenshell rode on the flat, taking the win by a few seconds. in the pits after the race, sponsor Mark Lamb extracted a nine-inch nail that was still in what was left of a new tire. The battle for number one was uneventful at the front of the Expert classes as six of the eight winners led every lap of their race. Todd Slavik won the big bores by a minute over Russ Dark. Mark McDonald blasted the 200cc class by nearly three minutes. Jeremy Butler took the 125cc class, but Rick Blasingame was closing when time ran out. Blasingame gets the charger award for methodically working his way to the front after rounding lap one in ninth. David Koontz outlasted Dana Wright for the Over 30 Expert win. Koontz passed every Expert rider who started. in front of him on his way to earning yet another Expert overall on his Yamaha WR250. Over 38 Expert Don Fitzsimmons 125 EX~ 1. Jeremy Butler (Hon); 2. Davis conquers MARS FT By John Bleckstock ASHEVILLE. NC, SEPT. 20 Reigning Motorcycle Asphalt Racing Series champion Will Davis overcame early race leader Dave Camlin to capture round three of the series at Asheville Motor Speedway. Davis, aboard a Harley-Davidson XR750, bounced back from a rare defeat by Camlin in round two to take the 600cc Expert main event as well as the points-paying 750cc final. The 600cc Expert main rolled to the line with favorites Davis and Camlin joined on the front row by a couple of young lions, Mike Hacker and Phil Libhart. Camlin led into tum one with Hacker, Davis, Libhart and John Nickens III breathing heavily down his neck. CamUn charged ahead while Hacker and Davis raced side by side for second. On lap four, Davis broke free of Hacker and closed the gap on Camlin. Two laps later he took the lead off tum four. Camlin 'now was under heavy pressure from Hacker. Davis cruised out front to the win, with Hacker trying every trick in the book to get around Camlin for second. Hacker '9ade his move going into tum one on the white-flag lap. He drove low under Camlin and held the inside line off tum two to cinch second. Camlin held on for third with Libhart and Robert Lewis rounding out the top five. The 750cc Expert main thundered into turn one with Camlin aboard the Skip Eaken-tuned XR750 Harley-Davidson out front with Davis, Hacker, Lance Jones and Chris Evans in pursuit. Camlin and Davis pulled out a s'light advantage, while Jones and Hacker waged war over third. The order r~mained the same until just past the halfway point when Davis muscled his way past Camlin into turn one and Hacker's engine let go coming off turn four just as it appeared he would get by Jones for third. Davis held off Camlin at the finish. Jones ftnished third with Recil Hart and the Canadian charger Evans rounding out the top five. Results 600 EX: 1. Will Davis (W-R); 2. Mike Hacker (Rtx); 3. Rueger heats up Alaska Road Race By Sam Combs TANACROSS, AI., SEPT. 15 Aaron Rueger set the pace in the Open and 750cc classes in road racing action at the old BLM Airfield. Racers from Anchorage and Fairbanksa meet three times a year in Tanacross, near the Arctic Circle, where cones are set up in a pattern that racers have been dodging for over 10 years. Competitors are sent out in ZD-second intervals to race the clock and dodge the pylons, th.. moss clumps and the possibility of avoiding any moose that might wander on to the track - and to think we hear about the whining concerning cat, dogs and monkeys from the professionals at the Malaysian Grand Prix.
