I·IN 'THE'WI-ND~ I Summer's c'linches GNCC title A Both Miguel DuHamel and Doug Chandler took part in a private Dunlop tire test at Daytona International Speedway recently. According to Dunlop, the test was to help whittle down some of the tires that will be tested again when all the top, Dunlop-usn:g AMA Superbike teams show up at Daytona in December. third-place finish at High Point Raceway in Mt. Summers last won the GNCC title in 1992, after winning the two previous years. Summers went into the High Point GNCC needing to finish third or better to claim the crown, which he did, giving him a total of eight off-road titles - five GNCC and three Hare Scrambles National Championships. Summers is now tied for second place with eight-time National Enduro Champion Dick Burleson for the all-time title record for offroad titles. Ed Lojak holds the record with 11 offroad championships. At the High Point race, reigning GNCC champScott Plessinger, of Team KTM, scored the win, while Team Yamaha's Duane Conner finished secqnd. Summers was third, followed by Yamaha riders Fred Andrews and Doug BI.ackwell. . There are still two rounds remaining in the 13-round series. Due to an injury suffered by lead Pony Express rider Joe Nardone, the Pony Express Preservation Ride has been postponed from October 1, 1996,. to June 24, 1997. With Vintage Iron International announcing last week that it will no longer sponsor AHRMA's Vintage Motocross Series beginning in 1997, California's Speed & Sport has jumped in and will back the Series in 1997. Speed & Sport will also continue as the title sponsor of AHRMA's Vintage Trials Series. Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California, has unveiled its Wall of Winners, 'which will list winners of all major events at the race track. The Cadillac Grill in Las Vegas will host Sportbike Nite on October 3, the night prior to the AMA Superbike National Championship weekend at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The AMA has announced the first sponsors of its National Champions Awards Banquet, scheduled to be held in Las Vegas on November 16. Early supporters of the event are K&K Insurance, PACE Motorsports, and the American Motorcycle Institute. The banquet will be held at the Imperial Palace Hotel & Factory Connection is currently accepting race resumes for 1997 rider support. Although the AMA Manufacturer Championship has yet to be decided in the AMA Superbike National Championship, Harley-Davidson and Honda have clinched the award for AMA Grand National Championship and AMA Motocross National Championships, respectively. The FIM Grand Prix Permanent Bureau met recently to examine the situation regarding fuel regulations for the 1997 racing season. It was decided, in absence of any position by the Grand Prix Manufacturers Association, that a decision regarding the use of unleaded fuel would be postponed until January 1. The FIM Technical Commission has drafted an unleaded-fuel-only regulation and the Grand Prix Manufacturers Association now has six months to take a position on that proposal. In light of the recent death of top-fuel motorcycle racer Elmer Trett, the Trett family has announced that they will continue to operate the family racing business. CN Lucero wins·U.S. National Speedway title S teve Lucero scored 14 points and defeated 1990-91 U.s. National Champion Mike Faria in a runoff to claim the U.S. National Speedway ChamJ>ionship !iefore 7,500 fans at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, Califorma, on September 28. Northern California rider Louis Kossuth was third with 11 points. Defending U.s. National Champion Greg Hancock scored 10 points and finished fifth.
