The sections were very tricky. Most of the championship-class riders complained about being off balance throughout the sections. Even when completing good rides, riders never felt like they had much control. The sections didn't have big obstacles as much as they were littered with varying sizes of boulders placed at many contrasting angles. It was hard to stay sharp throughout the entire section. '1 would get past the hard obstacles only to get a five later in the section when I was tired or slipped on something:' second-place finisher Lonny Hal1sted said. "At the end, my throttle hand was doing whatever it wanted:' Aaron said. '1 just had to hang on." • When asked about his injuries sustained earlier in the year, Aaron said, "It's still sore around the eye, but I'm 100 percent." When Aaron is at 100 percent, everyone else is battling for second place. Aaron won with 63.5 points. Betamounted Hallsted made it a good day for the Beta team, finishing in second with 99 points. Everyone else was in triple digits. Young brought his Gas Gas in at third place with 124. Ryon Bell piloted his Gas Gas to fourth place, finishing with 145 points. Rounding out the top five, Raymond Peters rode his Scropa to fifth place with 149 points. Because of the long, difficult sections, riders had a hard time finishing in the six-hour time limit. Most of the champ riders finished in the 30-minute grace period, adding half a penalty point per minute to their score. After 30 minutes, a rider is disqualified. Peters stretched the grace period by finishing 30 minutes and 15 seconds late. There was uncertainty over how Peters should be scored, and a huge debate followed concerning when'a rider is actually considered disqualified. Peters was more than 30 minutes late, but he wasn't 31 minutes late. After extensive debate, but with no clear rules or guidelines to reference, the club decided that Peters fell within the 30minute rule and counted his score. No rider felt the time much more than Gas Gas rider and local favorite Jess Kempkes, who was showing signs of brilliance and had some very spectacular rides. Kempkes was running a strong second, but failed to finish on time by seven minutes and was disqualified. That seven minutes dropped Kem~ kes in the points standings from third to sixth. m AMAINATC TrleJ OmMa, Nebraska R....1la: September 21, 1996 (Round 8 of 9) The Average Cost of a European 'Works' 500cc GP Bike is Roughly $28,000.
