noon started with a scenic overlook of the Colorado River. Then it was up to the switchbacks out of the canyon to the top of Gore Pass. The main water crossing was'a favorite picture spot. The route finished with the incredible singletack trail of Morrison Divide that dropped riders back into Steamboat ~rings. . . . The nders meeting Wednesday evening gave everyone a preview of the next three days of riding and a chan.ce to go over equipment preparation, safety and trail courtesy. Team Suzuki's Mark Hyde demonstrated tire changing, with riders guessing how Long it wouLd take. The closest guess won Dunlop tires. Thursday's 60-rnile loop had riders staging out of the Hahn's Peak Chalet that the organizers had provided. It became the center of activities for the next three days in that all of the routes passed by there. After crossing Farwell Mountain, riders had lunch on the trail next to a rushing stream before climbing the scenic Wyoming Trail. Cameras were provided by the organizers and (Above left and above) Steamboat Springs, Colorado, hosted 150 ,riders for the AMAlSuzukl Dual Sport Netlonal. photo opportunities were listed on the roll charts. Friday's loop started with wide fire roads through golden marshes and climbed into tall stands of Aspen trees that were changing their color. The setting changed to heavy woods as the trail became more rocky with large tree roots crossing the trail, which changed to single-track. Then came a big river crossing, more marshes and smaIL bridges leading to a second hillclimb. Abundant roots and rocks and tight switchbacks on a goat trail preceded the final peak climb, which had a lBO-degree tum on a pile of rocks. Saturday's loop of rocky trail led riders to another creekside lunch stop. The trail then headed nearly to Wy.oming, with numerous uphills, downhills and creek crossings.
