Nichols nails Norton Half Mile By Mike Zbrozek Photo By Duane Petersen NORTON, KN, SEPT. 2 Steve Nichols pulled off an impressive victory over Ricky Fiscel in the 600cc Pro class at the VDTRA Norton County Fairgrounds Half Mile. Fiscel and Nichols traded the lead frequently, both working the track flawlessly as they struggled for advantage, working aU available lines for the first nine of 12 laps. In the final quarter of the race, Nichols put a lead of several bike lengths on Fiscel. Almost unnoticed behind these two, Jim Forington worked his Yamaha by Roger Sterling and Joe Snyder for third. Fike also passed Sterling, but was shut out of fourth place by Snyder. 10 the Masters Pro division, series points leader John Fike was challenged early and often by former class champion Dave Barkley. Barkley worked by Fike to lead laps two and four before Fike found the fast way around, holding Barkley at bay. Masters Amateur points leader Fred Schritt worked his way past John Varbel for third in a fine effort. Fiscel took the Open Pro Twin lead from Fo.rington in the second lap and.checked out for the win. Californian Rick Reed worked through traffic from fifth to third, getting by the racelong battle between Frank Bardaro and Fike. Fike and Bardaro ran a close race for much of the last six laps, with Bardaro not giving any ground to his challenger. In other events, Jac Donald won the Open Twin class handily and Bill Walker took 250cc Pro honors over a steady second-place run by Steve McGee Sr. on a Bill Snyder Bultaco. Snyder filled the third spot for his effort. In another thriller, Steve Nichols held off Fiscel again to take home the money in the 600cc Pro Dash for Cash. Results DFC 600 PRO: 1. Steve Nichol5; 2. Creamer creams Stafford Springs Short Track By Sabrina Thomas STAFFORD SPRINGS, CT, AUG. 24 Aaron Creamer scored his personal best, a firstever win in the 600cc Pro-Am class, at the Stafford Springs Pavement Short Track, held as part of the Northeast Professional Flat Track Series and Stafford Springs' annual H-D Rodeo Weekend. After scoring the win in his heat, Creamer got the jump in the main. He quickly moved out front as brothers Chris and Mike Gurda pulled out from the pack in pursuit. Creamer stuck to the tar like glue as he maintained a strong leacl. As the race wound down and the crowd wound up for the finish, Creamer extended his lead over the Gurdas and grabbed an uncontested first victory. Mechanical demons got the best of veteran racers Bob Celle and Duane Veeder. In the 883 class, Gette £lew ou t of the pack with Steve Pouliot, running neck and neck for the first couple of laps. Coming into tum one in lap three, Gette got by Pouliot on a low line and pulled into the lead. Cette's lead lengthened to half a track over Poullot when Gette suddenly lost power and moved off the field. The culprit: a thrown chain. The same thing happened at the start of the 600cc Expert feature, with Celle never making it off the line. Duane Veeder and Roger Durkee each jammed their way into turn one in the 600cc Expert feature race, Veeder making it out first. Veeder continued to hold Durkee off until the halfway point, when Durkee moved up beside him to challenge. Durkee made his move by, and Veeder cranked it up to reclaim the lead. Suddenly, Veeder's bike just seemed to stop. Durkee was now free to take the checkers as a disgruntled Veeder could only watch. Results 250 PRO-AM: 1. Bob Weiss (Hon); 2. Mike Gurda (Hon); 3. PA, AUG. 31 During the final round of the inaugural AMA U.S. Women's Motocross League Outdoor Championship Series, Shelly Kann captured the title at Steel City by doing what she has done all season long - be consistent and capitalize on others' mistakes. Team Green ace Dee Wood took the motoone holeshot, with series points leader Kann and New Zealand Champion Shelley Hickman in tow. Kann passed Wood on the uphill doubles, but was repassed by Wood later during the lap. Kann washed out in a turn, giving Wood the breathing room she needed to win comfortably. Hickman blasted by Kann, but Kann would have none of that and reeled in her title rival to capture second. Third went to Hickman, followed by Hally Whitecotton and Jenifer Shultz. Wood grabbed the moto-two holeshot with Hickman, Kann, Hally Whitecolton, Tanya Roberts and Jenifer Shultz making their presence felt as the pack squeezed into turn one. Wood crashed approaching the uphill double, allowing several riders to pass. Wood remounted and charged through the pack, aggressively passing riders in an effort to catch the leaders. Wood attempted a midair pass on Schultz for fourth with the two riders colliding and going down hard. Shultz recovered quickly, while Wood had problems restarting. Kann and Hickman pulled away in a battle for the day's overall bragging rights, with Whitecotton holding a strong third. Thirteenyear-old sensation Tiffany Reed put in a strong race, working her way through traffic to pressure Roberts as the race entered its final stage. On the last lap, Kann led the field over Hickman, Whitecotton, Roberts, and Reed. Within sight of the flag, disaster struck Hickman as her bike seized, ending her season on a sour note. Kann went on to take the win, and with it the series title. A delighted Whitecollon crossed the line in second, securing second for the day and third in the series. Reed succeeded in passing Roberts to squeak into fourth with Stephens in fifth. Newly crowned AMA 250cc Champion Jeff Emig presented the first-place trophy to Kann, whose name entered in the record books as the AMA's first Women's Outdoor MX Series Champion. Results WMN: 1. White- Donald doubles at Colorado Vintage DT By Mlka Zbrozek HUGO, CO, SEPT. 1 Jac Donald was unheaded in the big-motor Amateur classes when the Total Performance Racers Vintage Classics IX Dirt Track Series came to the half-mile course at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds. In Open Twin Amateur competition, Donald cruised his Sass-tuned Yamaha to victory while a dogfight ensued for the second through fifth spots. Nebraska rider Fred Cuba held onto the second spot in lap one while Doug Stewart muscled his Ducati twin into a position to challenge with Mike Zbrozek in tow. On lap two, Stewart stuck a wheel in on Cuba coming through three and four as Cuba slipped off the groove, letting Stewart and- Zbrozek by him entering the main straight. On the next lap, Fred Schritt also threaded his machine by Cuba to move to fourth. On lap three, Zbrozek squeaked by Stewart for second and Schrill made the same move by Stewart for third, leaving the Ducati rider in fourth. The checkers saw Donald with a comfortable lead followed by Zbrozek, Schritt, Stewart, Ron Stone and Cuba. Once again, Donald found the fastest way around in the 600cc Amateur besting Rip Raygor and Roy Haines for the win. J.e. Clark and Zbrozek vied for the fourth position on each lap with Zbrozek taking the spot in the end. Ricky Fiscel led early in the 600cc Pro race. TPR-sponsored Steve Nichols worked every inch of the turns, pulling by Fiscel only to be repassed. Jim Forington was an unthreatened third while Roger Sterling was able to fight off Joe Snyder for fourth. Mark Gibson led the first laps of the Open Pro Twin main event. Gibson's ride looked like a speedway effort as he roosted his way through the outside of each turn with his front wheel cocked right and large quantities of race track spraying from his back tire high into the air. By lap three, Gibson had to move off his increasingly bumpy line and FisceJ took the point for good. Johnny Isaacs motored his TPR Triumph to third, followed by Rick Reed. Results DFC 600 PRO: 1. Ellington triples at Hunt Motocross When the first 125cc Expert moto rounded the first tum, Eddie VanBallygooyen was out front with Tod King and Darrell Stone close behind. Ellington got off to a last-place start and was working his way up front as Van Ballygooyen streched out his lead that would carry him to the moto win. Ellington passed King at midmoto and finished second to King's third. Ellington grabbed the second-moto holeshot and pulled out a ·Iarge lead for the race and overall wins. VanBallygooyen backed up his first-moto win with a second, good for second overall. Top national Vet rider Bart Lucas was third for third overall. Leading the first 250cc Expert moto was Ellington with Greg Meeder and Casey Higgins in tow. Higgins was making his Expert debut after competing in the B classes at Tennessee in August. Ellington maintained a slight gap on the Medder/Higgins battle for second. Higgins took control of second halfway through the moto and closed up the gap to Ellington, who held on for the win as Higgins took a well-respected second with Meeder in third. Ellington led the second 250cc Expert moto with VanBallygooyen and Higgins keeping them honest. Ellington led every lap for the win with Meeder holding second at the flag. Higgins overtook VanBallygooyen for third with two laps left in the moto. Elington took the overall with Meeder a.nd Higgins second and third overall, respectively. In Over 25 Expert action, Ellington took the early lead in both motos over Meeder each time Qut. Ellington was first in both motos with Meeder second both times.
