October 6 SETRA Enduro Series, Round 3 Smith takes the Cane By Kenneth King ABBEVILLE, SC, SEPT. 8 he 28th annual Long Cane Enduro held in the Sumpter National Forest was the site of round three of the SETRA Enduro Series, and with Hurricane Fran pressing down on the South Carolina coast, the club was expecting the worst. Luck prevailed, though, and Fran spared the forest of any destruction and supplied the trails with just enough rain for great traction, minus the dust. Three hundred and forty riders showed up on race day and Steven Smith, the 1994-'95 SETRA Hare Scrambles co-Champion (a . title he shared with Allen Gravitt), riding a Kawasaki KX250, topped the field for overall honors. Smith, who suffered mechanical problems in the series opener and did not race the second round, had an excellent ride with a score of 15, with Allen Gravitt and Jason Chancey having the next closest score with 17 each. Two of SETRA's top AA riders, Ashley Brewer and Frank Ramey, were not racing the enduro - Brewer is racing all the nationals this year and he was in Illinois, and Ramey was helping put on this enduro. Even with them absent, the competition was still very strong. The enduro consisted of 58 actual trail miles with sections before the gas stop, and checkpoints going into and out of each woods section. After the gas there was one long 14-mile section with a gOing-in check, a check in the middle, and a going-out check; this is where the riders were really dropping the points. The Sumpter National Forest has quite a variety of terrain, and this enduro had a little bit of everything. Tight woods," open trails, sand, rocks and some high-speed sections, enough to really test a rider. The first section had the riders get- T ""'0 ting into some tight stuff. Smith, Chancey and Michael Grizzle p<1lJred on the gas to drop three points each. Gravitt, Scott Miller, Jeff Harris and former SETRA/FTR Enduro Champion Joey Hopkins all dropped four points apiece. It looked as though a nice little battle was shaping up. Check 13 was a goingin check, and all of the riders went in on time. This was a tough section and all of the AAs dropped four points each except for Mike Martin and Joey Hopkins. As it turns out, Hopkins was out for a trail ride, so he wasn't taking things too seriously, just play riding. At the gas stop, Smith, Chancey, and Grizzle aU were tied with seven each, wh.ile Gravitt, Harris and Miller were down one point with an eight. Th.e section after the gas was one long 14-mile stretch of trail with plenty of tight woods and very few places to make up time. The riders knew that the race would be decided in this section. Check five was a going-in check, and all of the riders zeroed it with the exception of Grizzle, who got caught a little off guard and burned the check, costing him two points. Check six was placed about a third of the way into the 14-mile trail and Steven Smith really was on the gas and had the low score through with a two, while all of the other AAs dropped a three except for Grizzle and Martin, each taking a four. The riders kept going through the check with no reset after and the clock ticking away. The remaining trail left no opportunity to make up time, and Smith and Gravitt came out with the low score, tying· with six points each. Gravitt actually had the fast time through the last section but it would not help him in the overall. Smith would take the overall win with a 15, Gravitt and Chancey tied with 17 but'Gravitt took the tiebreaker for, second overall, with Chancey rounding out the top three. Tommy Veator cooked in the 200cc A class on his Kawasaki with an 18, tying for fourth overall with Scott Miller. Martin Pruett took second with a 20. The 250cc A class saw a tie between Johnny McCoy and Greg Roberts with Roberts taking the win on the tiebreaker. Mitch McRee burned up the Open A class on his '97 KlM 300 with a 21; Steve Hardman took second with a 24. Once again, former National Enduro Champion Terry Cunningham blitzed the Vet A class with a 19, five points better than class runner-up Robert Pearson. Robbie Neeley topped the Senior class. Frank Anello dropped 26 points to win the 250cc B class over Brent Mercer with a 27. In the Open B class Phillip Doyle and 8.J. Moretz battled it out aU day only to tie with 28 each. Doyle won out on the tiebreakers. In the 125cc C class, Reggie Yarbrough dropped 30 points for top honors in the C class. He beat all other C riders, with Shannon Ham in the Open C having the next lowest score with a 32. Glen Holcomb topped the FourStroke B class, as did Sue Heath in the Women's class. The club hosted a Mini Enduro the previous day for the kids. It was held on a two-mile course and run like a hare scrambles. The Pee Wee class was for rider up to 7 years old on 50cc bikes. Sawyer Barrow was really on the gas and took first place. Mathew Reed and Chaz Lawson finished second and third, respectively. The next race was for the Mini riders ages 6-13 on 51-85cc bikes and Junior riders 11-16 with 80cc bikes and up. The Mini riders raced seven laps with Michael Pitts taking the win. Heath Lee took second in a battle with Kenny Joode. They had a good battle with Lee coming out on top by only 10 seconds. The Juniors raced for nine laps with Frank Tomlinson taking the win and the overall for the day. Jammie Yon finished second.
