Interest and availability playa major role in the sport of dirt track racing. How many guys can go down to the local dealership and buy a full-on . factory replica racer such as a CR, YZ and KX or CBR and ZX? Well, you get the picture. The public sees a bike that Jeremy McGrath or Miguel DuHamel rides and wouldn't mind having one of those sleep in their garage. Plop down five grand at your local dealership and I'm doing nac-nacs that same afternoon. Now when I built my dirt tracker, it took me three years and nine grand. A few times I wished I would have bought one of those motocrossers and slapped 19-inch tires on it - I probably would have' spent a lot less on aspirin. Mike Collazo San Jose, CA More dirt I too am encouraged by the newly formed Dirt Track Racing Owners Group, who are trying to breathe some life back into Grand National Dirt Track racing. 1 really liked Sc.ott Rousseau's "In the Tapes" col\.irnn (Issue #37, September 18). The AMA has got to allow a new list of legal engines. I 'totally agree with the 100-horsepower limit that Scott proposed, but why a cylinder limit? Every major manufacturer makes a 600cc inline four tha t makes 100 horsepower stock. You can buy these machines out of wrecked street bikes all day long. My point is, why not make 100 horsepower the only guideline, 'INSIDE 2,.1996' .Issue #39, OctQber , along with a few weight limits, and turn people loose to get creative. Just put a dyno and a set of scales at the track - if you have 100 horsepower or more you need restrictors, if you have 100 horsepower or less, regardless of what brand or engine type you are running, line 'em up. This would allow builders an almost unlimited choice of motors, and would get almost all the major manufacturers back on the track. Besides 1000cc motors are easy to get 100 horsepower out of and are much easier from a maintenance stand point. I dirt track a 1975860 GT Ducati in a Trac1
