·ENDURO Enduro Series Final Round: Germany
World Championship
ed he would), the remaining three
champions were totally unexpected. The
winner of the World 125cc ChampionShip was little-known Italian Fausto
Scovolo, who gave Honda its first world
enduro title.
And 500cc-dass winner Jansson was
not even recognized in his own country.
"He must have improved a lot, he is
not consistent enough," said Sweden's
Sven-Erik Jonsson, a former world
enduro champion, moments after Jansson was crowned.
In a class which is begging for some
action, Scovolo claimed his 125cc title
after Finland's Petteri Silvan, the
defending champio~who recently
topped the 125cc class at the ISDE in
Finland, was injured after just one
round. Jansson, on the other hand, was
given his passage to victory after 500cc
favorite and defending champ Tiainen,
also a class winner at the Finnish Six
Days, spent the year getting over problems with severe head pains caused by a
sin us ailment.
"T will have an operation in the offseason," said Tiainen, who was somewhat disappointed with the way his
championship was lost. "I could not ride
in the previous round, the pain was so
bad."
If Scovolo's and Jansson's wins came
as a surprise, then the 175cc-class win
by England's three-time 125cc world
champion was even more of a shock.
Sure, the man they call "Eddy" is a legend in world enduro, but lining up
against guys called Sala and Peterhansel
(as in French off-road superstar
Stephane Peterhansel) can be a daunting
task. Added to Edmonson's seemingly
difficult task was the fact that the
machine he would be riding, a Spanishbuilt Gas Gas, was only in its second
year of competition. In the previous season, Edmonson could not even get a day
win, let alone thinking about a champiqnship.
"At times I thought, 'Have I done the
