"My main problem was my rear
tire," Slight said. "One minute 1 was
doing 2:05s and the next 1 couldn't get
any faster than 2:06s. My bike was sliding allover the place. 1 had Hodgson
behind me and I knew it was possible to
keep him there. But in a normal situation 1 should've been far in front of
him."

or once, the fastest qualifying time wasn't set in the final
moments of the second session. Some 25 minutes before
the close of qualifying, John Kocinski hammered an
impressive 2:04.414 on the clocks after having done consistent
2:04.65 and 2:04.5s several laps before.
"I could've easily done a 2.03," Kocinski said. "But I was
tired, and J just wanted to have a good time as early as possible
and then call it quits for today. I'm only working with two pe0ple from the team. and that's how I want to do it."
With this result, Kocinski forced Carl Fogarty back to second
position on the grid. The reigning World Champion, who had
won the six previous World Superbike races on this circuit, had
another go at the pole time with 10 minutes left in the session,
but finally had to be happy with 2:05.178.
Despite the fact that he wouldn't start from pole, Fogarty
was satisfied with his second-fastest time, especially as he had
been suffering from his injury from Sugo. On Friday morning.
Dr. Corbascio's team at the C1inica Mobile had discovered that
the Briton had broken a rib in two places.
"They should have found that in Sugo," Fogarty said. "Then
I could have rested for two weeks before coming here. But the
pain kept on, and it was only when I insisted that they decided
to have it X-rayed on Friday morning. Then they discovered the
two brea1
