The 1996 Desert Cannonball rally by Pharaons will take place in Egypt, October 11-19. Ute event, which has not been run since the 1993 AMA Grand National season, has been scheduled for October 20 - one week after the AMA Grand National Championship Series finale Del Mar Mile - and will be the highest-paying non-Grand National event in history, boasting a $50,000 7SOcc Expert purse. Gary Stolzenburg. of G&C Racing Inc., is promoting the event. Stolzenburg.. who also owns F&S Harley-Davidson and the F&S Harley-Davidson race team of Steve Morehead, and has been promoting dirt track races since 1971, said that the time is right for the return of San Jose. ''I'm doing this for two reasons," Stolzenburg said. "One, I tIiink the San Jose Mile was always a heck of a thrill to watch, and I'd like to see it back. And two, 1 want to take all the the profits from this race and put it right back into the People's Point Fund for the top 20 riders. In 1994 we paid out $35,400. In 1995 it was $37,000. I'm not going to make a dollar off this race. It's all going back to the riders. And all of the top riders have promised me that they will be there: Parker, Atherton, Morehead, Davis, Springsteen, all of them." ' Stolzenburg said that in addition to the Expert purse, the race will pay a $5000 Harley-Davidson 883 purse, a $3000 600cc Expert purse and a $2000 600cc Pro-Am purse. Stolzenburg also said that there will be more than just motorcycle racing taking place at the event. An antique car and motorcycle show will be held in conjunction with the race. . The first motorcycle to be produced by the Minnesota-based manufacturer will be a cruiser named Victory. Stay tuned. Michael T. Keehan will ride a BMW KllooLT in the Fourth Anrtual Ride for AIDS Education. Keehan will leave Los Angeles on September 3 and is scheduled to arrive in New York on September 16. With the battle for the AMA Superbike National Championship going to the final round at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on October 6, it's interesting to note that a win in Vegas for Miguel DuHamel would give him 14 AMA Superbike wins in his career, tying him for fourth with four-time World Champion Eddie Lawson. It would also put him only six wins behind the all-time AMA Superbike National win leader, Fred MerkeL. A Doug Chandler win in Vegas would give him eight career AMA Superbike wins, moving him into a tie for 10th with Wes Cooley. Both DuHamel and Chandler are trying to win their second Superbike National Championships. Lawson, Wayne Rainey and Wes Cooley have won two AMA Superb ike titles while Merkel and Reg Pridmore are the only three-time winners of the series. Yoshimura Suzuki's Aaron Yates became the 36th rider to win an AMA Superbike Natiol1al when he scored the win at Sears Point Raceway on August 25.
