Shelly Kann captures Washougal Motocross By Debbie Matthews WASHOUGAL, WA, AUG. 17 With the injury of points leader Amber Hughes during Loretta Lynn's. the AMA/U.5. Women's Outdoor Championship points lead was up for grabs at round three in Washougal, and 1995 Stadium Champion Shelly Kann is the one who did the grabbing. With Kann and New Zealand Champion Shelley Hickman deadlocked on points heading into Washougal, every point would be critical to secure the lead going into the final in Steel City, Pennsylvania. Kann seized the moto-one holeshot, but she was quickly passed by title rival Hickman and Trad Fleming. Local favorite Heming wasted little lime in flaunting her home-track advantage, soon relegating Hickman and Kann to second and third, respectively. Fleming pulled a slight gap over Hickman and Kann as the duo scrapped for position. Kann fmolly passed Hickman through the doubles leading into Leach's Lump. With lime running out, Kann set a blistering pace in a futile attempt to secure the win. Heming held on for the win over Kann, Hickman and Emily Norton. Dawn Piazza overcame a horrible start to charge through the pack and finish fifth. Hickman led the charge in moto two with Kann, ~hitecotton, Fleming, Bourke, Piazza, and Norton scrapping for position. Whitecotton was the ftrst to faU victim 10 the ferocious pace, going down hard in the double preceding Leach's Lump and putting herself out of the race. Piazza passed Norton on the big uphill and Bourke through the downhill esses to take fourth. Kann, meanwhile, quickly mowed in on Hickman, passing her through the doubles. Fleming dropped .back to third as Kann and Hickman battled for the lead. On the last lap, Hickman charged into the Wiseco Whoops alongside Kann, only to crash. Heming stormed into second as Hickman remounted. Fonowing Hickman's mishap, Piazza closed the gap but ran out of time and finished fourth, followed by Norton. With Kann winning the moto and Hickman finishing third, the damage was done. Kann would leave Washougal with a seven·point lead heading into the final. (N Results WMN: 1. Shelly Kann (Yam); 2.
