Former BOcc National Champion Jake Holden had a night of ups and downs. On the up side, Holden grabbed the lead at the start of the BOcc A main and led every lap. Scooter Vernonwho earlier won the 80cc DTX class - ran second throughout the final, followed by Kyle Bunger, Nick Sellers and a four-way, fifth-place battle which went Andy Fay's way. A last-lap pileup in the 250cc A main, though, spoiled Holden's fine night. Chaos was prevalant in the final, as it took four restarts to finally get the action under way. Things went smoothly as Brian McGonigal, Robert Rosie and Holden held positions in the top three. As McGonigal breezed to a win ahead of Rosie, three other racers - Eric Beers, Holden and Pete Medcalf - tangled, sending Holden and Medcalf tumbling down the straightaway. Holden came out the worse, breaking a bone in his foot. Medcalf was unhurt, but his KX was badly bent. Beers, however, felt lucky to escape with minor injuries. "[ felt Holden hit me," Beers said. "I was lucky to save it. All that happened to me was a swollen lip." . Chris Fitzhugh and Ryan Anderson were the Expert heat-race winners, but despite their starling positions for the main event, Annen forged to the head of the pack in the final, followed by Ron Waters, Wilson, Fitzhugh and Steve Pruczinski. While Annen opened up a slim lead, Wilson relegated Waters to third and set out after Annen. Wilson stayed right on Annen's rear wheel for the remainder of the race, even taking a brief lead. Annen took it right back, though, grabbing a win ahead of Wilson, Waters and Eli Price. Results EX: 1. Jeff Annen (W R); 2. Don Wilson (Rtx); 3. Ron Waters (Rtx); 4. Eli Price (Rtx). PRo-.AM: 1. Bryan Lang would nail the first-moto holeshot over Kevin Tarwater and Townsend and would hold them off for a lap before sliding out in the freshly watered track. By lap two, Townsend had the lead and was pulling away from Tarwater, who had his han.ds full with Jose Polasek and Scott Priputen. Priputen pushed Polasek back to third, then passed Tarwater, who was fading quicker than a bad paint is>b. Townsend put in a mistake-free ride for the win. l'riputen got to within a tum of .Townsend for second with Polasek a distant third. John Buller put his Factory'Edge-backed tR125 underneath Polasek at the second-moto start to lead briefly. Townsend was taking no prisoners and halfway through lap one was already out front. Townsend's lead grew with each lap as his Jack in the Box-sponsored Honda didn't miss a beat en route to the victory. The battle for second went down to the wire with Polasek holding off Priputen by a wheel at the checkers. Lang kept Buller at bay for fourth. At one point, Alvin Zolamea looked to have the first 250cc Novice moto in the bag after getting around fast-starter Tyler Buck and opening up a five-second lead by the midway point. Cole Townsend came from out of the pack to chase down zaIarnea and pressure him with the white flag in sight. Townsend pulled next to zaIamea in the final corner, but Zalamea was quicker through the whoops before the finish-line jump for the win. Buck grabbed his second holeshot of the night and held off Townsend for a lap before he railed around him for th." lead. Zolamea gated last and was working up when his shoulder popped out, forcing him to retire. Townsend continued uncontested for the win. Buck easily beat Manuel Ospina and Brent Greer for second overalL Results P/W (4-6): 1. Shawn Butler (Yam); 2. David Medina (Yam); 3. Shana Rhinehart (Yam); 4. Logan Russell (Yam). P jW (7·9): 1. Valdez victorious at Perris Motocross By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA, AUG. 24 . . Orange County Suzuki-backed Oscar Valdez put together two perfect motos in the 125cc intermediate ranks to score the overall victory during the next-to-last round of the GFI Night race series held at Perris Raceway. Valdez and many of the other racers were caught off guard by a freak black cloud that dumped down heavy rain for an hour before the start of the day's practice. The rain left the track a little wet for the early motos, but almost perfeet for most of the night's races. Valdez was quick to establish himself as the rider to beat in the 125cc Intermediate class after passing early race leader Dalmy Montoya in the first moto. From that point forward, Valdez went on uncontested lor the moto win. Josh Tarantino was back in his first race since breaking his arm in a practice crash and recorded the runner-up position on his NCYbacked Yamaha, while Josh Warner, And·rey. Labrador and fast starler Montoya rounded out the top five. The second moto saw Valdez get his Orange County Suzuki out front from the drop of the gate, and he never looked back. New AMA minicycle champion Bryan McGavran ran second on his BOcc machine up
