could keep pace. Kling was mired back in fourth behind Stanton and Sadowski, taking until the seventh lap to move up to second. By then Batey had over four seconds and looked like he was on schedule to do the double. It wasn't to be. With less than two laps to go, and Kling on t~e boil, Batey overshot turn one and Kling was back in it. "1 wasn't that comfortable," Batey explained. "Fritz was riding at a really good pace, so was Dave. I could get a glimpse of the guys a little bit when we'd go through the Iittre hairpin in the back. I saw Fritz, and he was really close and I was trying to put together a really good second race and trying to be smooth and fast. When he's on his game, he really goes good. So I was just trying to do my own thing and put together a good race. "We started to encounter some lapped traffic. I had some pretty good breaks. I think Fritz did too, in the infield. I came down the front straightaway going into tum one here and I was a little distracted trying to figure out which way a guy I was going to lap was going to go. And when I decided what I was going to do, I was in pretty damn hot. I decided the best thing for me to do is regroup and get back on the track." At that point Kling was by, though he'd nearly gone the same route as Batey. "1 actually kind of looked at him and almost went that way myself," Kling said, adding that, although he didn't give up, he thought Batey would have won if he hadn't made the error. "1 never quit. See what happened? "It was tough. I went as hard as I couId. I knew he was looking over his' shoulder. I tried hard to stay at the front. I want to Win the championship. I want to win a couple races and that's part of it." Kling's win was slightly slower than Batey's first-leg win, the Dutchman rider needing 22 minutes, 31.430 seconds to complete the race at an average speed of 86.575 mph. Batey's win was about a second faster. Third place, abo'ut three seconds back, came Sadowski, the Georgian unable to take advantage of Batey's mishap to gain a spot. "He (Batey) drove off in one, turned back on and still was ahead of me," Sadowski said. "That thing's a mutt," he said of his Honda CBR900. "I went as hard as I possibly could and then some. I had angels catching me on both sides. I was losing it and they'd go, 'Okay, got you.''' Stanton was a fading fourth, then came Mike Sullivan, the AMA 250cc GP regu lar in his first ride on the 850cc Zlock Racing Kawasaki. Because he'd crashed in the first leg, Sullivan was gridded on the seventh row for the second one. His progress was sure and steady and he was able to pass his Zlock Racing teammate, Deatherage, on the final lap to take fifth. "1 was just charging. I slowly picked them off. I was trying to used my head. It was so rough out there," Sullivan said "This thing has the power to rip down the straightaways." Sullivan and Deatherage had gotten away from Wood, who'd crashed out hf the first leg, then came TBR Racing's Michael Fitzpatrick and Wood's teamf'N mate Richard Alexander.
