Though many of h;s competitors switched to fresh motorcycles for the second day of racing a1 SpMngfield, Dave Camlin and Skip Eaken were actual· Iy forced to stay with Camlins Saturday winner, the Don Camlin chaSSiS now affectionately known as "Down Under Too." after the Eaken-chassied bike gave them problems on Sunday. Camlin said that the leam had trouble with the winning rnachine, too. "We broke a valve spring," Camlins said. "So we had to change a cylinder head. " "ThiS is the way to go," Kevin Atherton said' of the Springfield doubleheader. "Th;s g;ves the fans two races to go to. and they don't have to travel. The IMDA does such a good job here, and this ;s truly a world-class facility. We might as well do a doubleheader here. Heck. we could come here on Memoriai Day and then do a doubleheader on Latior Day. That wouldn't bother me a b;t." J_ Kopp and Scott Parker agreed with the Springfield doubleheader concept as well, although Kopp didn't necessaMIy want to see three races a year there. "This .is really cool," Kopp saki. "They should run 'em both on Labor Day but let us 1/0 home and go fishing on Memorial Day." Parker c0ncurred. "This ;s great for the fans. and it works for us." Parker said. "It's best when you have two day races I;ke !h;s. It's better than one night race and one day race like we used to do at Indy. And th;s ;s the premier mile track in the country. " Bill W....r hed plenty to be proud of on Sunday after h;s two champions - Parker and Springste~ fin;shed in the top five, but the 1O-time' Grand National Championship-winning mechanic saved the biggest hug for Springer. "The race was two laps too long," Werner told SpMngsteen. "You are still the man. I hope you enjoyed it. T.rry Poovey showed up to Springfield with the motor in the same configuration. "I guess I do like it, kinda." Poovey said. "And we've got more power this weekend." Poovey wound up WIth I 1-18 finishes in the finals. One team apparently hav;ng no trouble making horsepower at Springfield was the Gardner AacinglWalters Bros. Harley-Davidson team. whose Mder Dan Butler appeared to be really fast In pract;ce. "We read Cycle News last week." team mechanic Greg Crow explained. "And if Bill Werner can do a valve Job and win a mile, then I guess we have to do one too. But it helps if you have a rider who can ride the wheels off the thing," Buller was 14th on Saturday and improved to 10th on Sunday.. Will Davis and Jay Spring.-n were among the riders sporting sol"ne rather evil·looking welts from "the marbles at the edges of the groove, which were kicked up throughout the day. Davis in particular showed off a silver dQllar·sized bru;se on h;s right shoulder, "That's my tattoo. man," Davis joked. And what about Will Davis? The champ;onsh;p contend;ng North Carolinan has had worse week· ends at Springfield - like last year' 5 heart wrenching engine fa;lure·wh;ch snatched victory from his hands on MemoMal Day weekend .- but he's tiad better as . well. After a mistake on Saturday cost him the win. Davi~ never seemed to get ~lIing on Sunday ~nd thus bettered that position by "only" three places on Sunday. "I "don't know." Davis !;akl. "' guess I need more comer speed. After closer scrutiny•. Steve Morehead found the source of the trouble that dropped his motor to one cylinder and cost him a shot Saturday's victo· ry. "We had a coif go bad." Morehead sa;d. "I stilrted it th;s morning, and it sounded fine, and then when it warmed up. it went dead again." Nonetheless, Morehead kept himself and the fans entertained on Saturday as he stayed on the race track in the hope of picking IJp points. The "Findlay . Flyer" continually waved to the crowed and even· tuaily provoked them ;nto dO;Jlg the wave every time that he went by. " We were just mak;ng the best of a bad situation," Morehead said. "That was fun anyway. " Scott Perker gave the good folks at Burks Productions a lesson ;n on·board camera placement during practice on Saturday. Parker was running around with one of the $2500 mini-cams when it came loose and began dllflgling in his forks. "I thought ;t might get caughl up in sQmething, 50 I r.eeched down and ripped it loose." Parker said. "Then I thought, 'Now what the hell am I gonna do with it?' So I said. 'See ya", and I just chucked it down the back stra;ghtaway. Then I was thinking, 'I wonder how much that just cost 'em?' " The camera was not damaged in the incident.
