The word was that Mischler had an old 1000cc boxer lying around the shop and decided to see what it would do on the dirt. It seemed to do all right, as he piloted the unconventional flat track bike to a heat-race win. In the final, though, Duvall fought his way to the lead ahead of Mischler and a squad ron of Yamahas. Mischler kept the pressure on and repeatedly aftemped the loose dirt on the outside, trying to find a way around or force Duvall into a mistake, but Duvall held strong, narrowly claiming the victory. Again the duo opened up a sizable lead over the rest of the pack, Witmer opening up a five-bike-Iength lead by the halfway mark. Royko, h wever, closed in on Witmer on the white-flag lap. Witmer pinned the throttle exiting the sand pit and cleared the tunnel jump by leaping 65 feet, well beyond the table drop-off. Royko matched his jump foot for foot, closing to less than a bike length. As the pair exited the front half, spectators ran to the first downhill to see who would emerge first. The first bike to drop off the ski jump was Witmer's, with Royko still a half a bike length back. Witmer claimed his first victory at Leisure Time in 1996 and later said, "[It was] a tough track, and I wish I'd had more sl~p." Royko responded by beating Witmer in the Over 30 A class, winning three of the four motos of the day and taking the overall. Witmer finished second overall. Results AUTO 1. B. Ruston (KTM). 60: I. C. Hundertmark won the 250cc Pro class ahead of Sportland 2's George [stvanek and Jeremy Deruyter on a Kuchenbecker Roofing & Construction-sponsored Honda. That, along with wins in 250cc and 500cc Amateur classes and a third in the 600cc Pro class, made Hundertmark the winningest rider of the evening, by far. Ahead ofJohn in the 600cc Pro class was KomeIy's Craft Center-sponsored Mark Komely and the always-fast Bob Ybema. A habitual double class winner, Tyler Smulders, only claimed one win on the evening, that being in the 80cc Junior class. He was defeated in the 60cc class by Jesse Janisch on a Young America-backed Kawasaki. Of course Janisch, the recently crowned grand national champion in the SOcc Senior class, is no slouch either. Current SOcc Mini champ, Dylan Vandenhoek, sponsored by Mischler's H-D & BMW, was held to second place in the 50cc Shaft Drive class by Derek Weber. One of the best races of the evening was in the Vet class, where D.]. Transmissions-sponsored Tom Boerger and John Dricken went at each other the en!ire eight laps of the final. Much of the time the two looked tike a synchronized riding team as they circled the full track side by side. But when it counted, Boergers got a slightly better drive out of tum four on the last lap to snag the victory by no more than a wheel length. Michael Duvall on an 883 Harley and Art Mischler on a BMW put on a fine display of rac- LANCASTER, CA, AUG. 16 Donald Upton was in fine form as he posted a fou r-moto sweep of the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes during the final round of Full Blown Prom.otion's Hot Supercross Nights Series at the Anelope Valley Fairgrounds. Upton set the tone for the night's racing by reelIng off the first 12Scc Pro mota holeshot and pulling away for the uncontested win. Brian Sweany and D.J. Sweany fought over second until D.J. went down. Jiri Dostal worked his way past Mark Easley and then pressured Brian Sweanyal] the way to the finish for a close third. Eric Schnell's second moto lead lasted only half a lap before Upton shot past on a long choppy straight. While Upton cruised away for the win. Schnell, Easley, Brian Sweany and Dostal put on a good show for the crowd as they battled over second place. In the end it was Dostal holding off Schnell by a couple of bike lengths to take home the second-place money. Easley led the first 250cc Pro moto over Brian Sweany and Upton. Within a lap Upton was out front and pulling away, and although Sweany hounded Easley for most of the race, he eventually had to settle for third. Brian Sweany nailed the second moto holeshot and held off Upton for just over a lap. Upton styled en route to his fourth win of the night and th'e lion's share of the Pro purse. Sweany held off a hard-charging Easley in the final laps for a well-deserved second. Ricky Hemme picked up the Pee Wee (0-9) Modified-class overall win with a double mota win over Bryce Terzian and Andreu Mayoi. Terzian returned to take the Pee Wee (0-6) Super Stock win on his K1M with 1-1 finishes ahead of Shawn Langham and Tyler Hemme. Nick Butterworth was untouchable in both 12Scc Novice races on his Suzuki. Travis Smith and Lance Austin each picked up a runner-up finish, Smith's corning in round two to break the tie. J.J. Bonanno kept his 125cc Beginner-class win streak alive by topping Fred Steele and Jason Ebel in both motos. Results P/W (0-6): I. Shawn Butl@!'(Yam);2.A.J.Schahrer(Yam);3. AUG. 16 Steve "Bad Boy" Lucero was in top form Friday night as he claimed both the Scratch and Handicap main events at Costa Mesa Speedway's Harley Night. Lucero worked his way up the Scratch side of the program by winning his heat and semi races, his luck continuing as he drew the pole for: the majn. Next to him in two was Gary Hicks, and in the middle of the track, via the Last Chance, was Bobby "Bugaloo" Schwartz. Shawn McConnell drew the fourth slot, with John Aden on the far outside in five. Even before the gate came up, the veterans managed to sucker Aden into the tapes and he was gone. On the second try, Hicks went down in one and McConne.ll's footpeg caught him in the back. After Hicks performed a body inventory, the riders lined up for a third try. This ti.me it was Lucero who read the gate and was first to the turn. The real battle was for second position in the quick four lapper, arid it was Schwartz with the best line for the first two laps. On the white flag lap, McConnell made the pole work for him and dropped Schwartz to third. Rounding out the field in fourth was Hicks. The lIneup for the Handicap Main got stightIy rearranged after Jesse Finch and Ed Castro tried to beat the tape and were moved to the penalty line. Jake Zemke, Steve Furman and Jason Chism all shared the 30. Andy Northrup and Aden were left on the 40, while Lucero was the sole tennant on the SO. A red flag came out after two laps when Finch went down, Northrup retaining his established lead on the single file restart. Right behind Northrup was Lucero, with Aden in third. Lucero proved that luck is all about being in the right place at the right time when Northrup, who had lead the entire race, hooked up big time coming out of tum four of the last lap and popped a major wheelie that put him on the ground. Lucero was right behind him, and quickly sailed by to take the win. The Sidecar Main saw Peter Lewis and Jamie Macy battle teammates John Matherson and Scott Cole for three laps before Matherson and Cole oversteered coming out of four and ended up in the infield. They were forced to watch as Duane Carmont and Richard Tailing got by for second while Bob Brayton and Parke Weaver picked up the show spot. Paul Bimquist won the Support Main, with Richard Jones second and John DeFries third. R.sults P/W BEG: 1. Andrew Couto (LEM); 2. Timmy Ritzier (KTM); 3. Brennan Mc:Gimris 4.
