Ferro family flies at LACR MX By Greg Robertson PALMDALE, CA, AUG. 17 The father and son team of Mike and Jeremy Ferro went home winners of the Old Timers Expert and 125cc Beginner classes, repectiveJy, during California Racing Gub's Saturday night motocross at Los Angeles County Raceway. Bob Fiesler pulled one of his patented old timers Expert-elass holeshots aboard his KX500 to lead Herb Allen and George Lazenby as moto one began. Mike Ferro gated ninth, but within a lap was pressuring Charles Howell, who held down second place behind Allen. Ferro would catch Allen by the halfway point and hound him all the way to the white-flag lap, where he was finalJy able to make the pass. Howell took third with Scott Freeman holding of Fiesler for fourth. Fiesler assumed his usual lead position as moto two started and managed to stay out front for three laps before Freeman found a way around. Fiesler stayed glued to Freeman and was joined by Allen, making it a good threerider battle for the lead. Ferro had slowly been working up from a near last-place start to pass Fiesler for third with a lap remaining. With the white flag waving. Ferro overtook AlJen on the over-and-under jump, then pulled next to Freeman as they raced for the checkers. Freeman took the win by a wheel, but Ferro got the overall. Jeremy Ferro grabbed the first 125cc Beginner moto holeshot aboard his White Brotherssponsored Honda and never looked back. Masashi Motohashi double-jumped his way past Arron Oem for second place at the midway point, where he would finish. August Culver came from the back of the pack to chalJenge Motohashi for second, only to have his bike quit half a lap from the finish. The second moto was lengthened from seven laps to 20, which seemed to suit Ferro just fine. Ferro lapped all the way up to fourth place in his runaway victory. Tyson Tittlemier held down the runner-up position throughout the marathon to finish third overall behind the 2-3 rides of Motohashi. Results P/W (0.6): 1. Shawn Butler (Yam): 2. Ken Renaux(Suz), Dostal debuts at Perris MX By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA, AUG. 17 Jiri Dostal made a memorable Pro debut by posting a double moto victory in the 125cc Pro division during round eight of the GFJ Night Racing series held at Perris Raceway. Dostal's long-awaited move to the Pro ranks was put on hold due to the AMA Amateur National at Loretta Lynn'S. "I knew J was fast enough to race Pro like six months ago," Dostal said. "But I needed to wait until after Loretta's to move up." • Dostal won two out of the three motos he raced at the Amateur National and proved that he- is withouf a doubt one of the fastest amateurs in the country. . . Dostal came out swinging in the Pro ranks by pulling holeshots in both motos and Simply running away from the field. Eric Schnell was second-fastest in both motos and helped complete a Suzuki sweep of the top two spots. Seam Hamblin was a surprise winner in the 125cc Intermediate class, surprising because he won the class while riding a minicycle. Hamblin finished a close second in the first moto behind Danny Montoya, who led the race from the drop of the gate. The second moto saw Hamblin chase down and pass Montoya for the mota and overall victory. Hamblin was one of the few racers throughout the evening who were turning lap times faster than one minute. Cale Wallace cleaned house in the 80cc Novice division by way of a double moto victory. Wallace raced harder than the competition while opening up huge leads in both motos. Wallace even topped Intermediate rider Bi1Iy Lanovich i.n both motos, while Nick Alvarez was a solid second-place finisher in the final moto, Results Little Track 5rK BEG (4-6): 1. Demuth dominates at Red Bud Motocross By Larry Witmer BUGlANAN, ML AUG. 4 Josh Demuth won both the 125cc and 250cc Ex.pert divisions with holeshots and runaway wins to ciaim his share of the YZ bucks up for grabs'at the Yamaha Series Event held at Red Bud Track. Demuth ripped the opening moto in the 250cc division, followed by Mark Laughlin, as John Baker, Carey West, and Bob Nugan ran in close pursuit of the front-runners. Daker piloted past Laughlin in the Valley Triple Jump, taking over second place on the opening lap. , By the time Demuth had made his way to the famous "LaRocco Leap" area of the track, he had established a two-second lead over Baker, Mugan made a wild charge through the LaRocco Leap area, overtaking West and Laughlin with a huge jump. Nugan passed both riders in the air, almost crashing on the hard landing. but kept it upright and made his mark in the third spot on the track. Demuth destroyed the whole 250cc Expert field, taking home the first-moto win. Baker was back almost 10 seconds coming across second, and Nugan held his speed, taking the third spot. Carey West took the fourth position while Joe Beher tallied fifth. Second-mota action again saw the speedy Demuth rip another holeshot and go uncontested for the entire mota. Hat! Wheelright was second around the first· comer, followed by Baker in third, Beher fourth and Steve Rourke in fiflQ. Rourke's run at the front was brief, ending when he washed out while going through the comer preceeding the big ski jump and remounted in the last position. Demuth opened up his usual lead advantage by the completion of the first lap. Baker muscled by WheeJright in the new section of the track in the apple orchard, and Nugan recovered after gating sixth by moving through the pack on the opening lap to secure third place. AUG. 10 Mike Sassano took his Duck's Suzuki to the overall win in the 125cc B divison under the lights at the Trojan Night Track Motocross, charging up from the back of both motos after bad starts. The opening mota of the 125cc B saw Brian Loy ·rip the holeshot around the sweeping right, hand comer leading onto the nigbt track. Nate Green gated second, Brad Cannon third, Dane Grevicic fourth and Brant Watson fifth. Green moved his Yam.aha into the lead entering into the superbowl by overjumping Loy, who wasn't doing the pipe jump in the infield area and lost his second position to Cannon on the second lap. At the completion of the second tap, it was Green with the lead, Cannon second, Loy holding Watson at bay for third, Mike Sassano fourth and Grivicic fifth.
